Steps in Survey Creation PSY3 652 Research Methods II ©20 16 South University 2 Steps in Survey Creation Surveys The steps in the process of a survey are listed below. For each, we will follow the experiences of Jordan Ray, a student interested in studying college students' perceptions of marriage. 1. The first phase is to develop a hypothesis and decide on the type of survey. Next, the survey questions must be written, decisions be made on response categories, and then the layout of the survey must be designed. Ray 's hypothesis is that college students perceive marriage as a lifelong partnership between two individuals. He feels that college students will be more likely to respond if he designs his survey in the form of an online questionnaire. He plans to include t welve questions because he thinks that students will not respond to a long survey, and will include different question formats, including dichotomous and multiple choices. Ray makes note of all this information, because he knows he will need to present it at the end of his research. 2. The second phase of the survey is to plan how to record the data, and then pilot the test survey instrument. Ray will use an existing survey program that will automatically synthesize his data and that has the capability of d oing simple statistical analyses that he and his advisor decide are appropriate. He then decides to pilot the survey by sending it out to a small group of students. Ray makes note of the results of his pilot study and explains the reasoning behind the meth ods of statistical analysis because he knows he will include this information in his final paper. 3. The third phase includes deciding on the target population, getting a sample frame, deciding on the sample size, and selecting the sample. Ray will survey fifteen college students from six different universities, for a total sample size of eighty. Ray writes down this information to use in his work at the end of the study. 4. The fourth phase requires that respondents are located, interviews are conducted, and data recorded carefully. After reviewing his sample frame, size, and selection, as well as the results of the pilot study with his advisor, Ray sends out his survey. 5. In the fifth phase, data must be entered into a computer database , all data must be rec hecked, and a statistical analysis on all data must be performed. Ray uses the capabilities of the surveying program to synthesize his data and perform statistical analyses. He takes notes on what he is doing throughout this process to include in his fin al paper. 6. In the sixth and final phase of the survey process, the findings and methods used must be described in a research report, and the report must be presented to others for critique and evaluation.
