Overview

Sustainability in all forms is receiving greater attention from companies and consumers. Marketers have a part to play in the sustainability push too. The purpose of this activity is to encourage you to think about methods of alternate packaging that may be more sustainable for the future.

==============================================================================

Suppose Delta Faucet is interested in ideas for ‘greener’ packaging that could replace traditional packaging such as regular cardboard and styrofoam.

It is important that this replacement packaging be something eco-friendly, so using plastic would NOT work.

Packaging Digest is a trade magazine and an excellent resource to help you learn more about sustainable packaging. In particular, visit http://www.packagingdigest.com/sustainable-packaging for links to several articles related to sustainable packaging. At the bottom of the page, click “Show More,” and additional articles will display, including one entitled, “2 New year’s resolutions for sustainable packaging in 2018.” Other recent articles are listed on the next page as well.

Packaging World is another trade source that provides a great deal of information related to sustainable packaging. Visit https://www.packworld.com/design/sustainability to see very recent articles related to this topic (the most recent being June 12th, 2018).

To get you thinking in the right direction, consider these examples of green packaging that companies are already exploring. While these are neat concepts, keep in mind that your client is interested in NEW ideas, so don’t use either of these ideas for your forum post.

  1. Biodegradable seed paper packaging (also known as 'Plantable Paper') that mixes paper pulp and wildflower seeds.  Modified seed paper can serve as a replacement for cardboard.

  2. Mushroom root to replace styrofoam.  Check out these links to learn more about how it works:

Assignment:

Propose your idea for 'greener' eco-friendly packaging that would be a more sustainable replacement for cardboard and styrofoam packaging:
  1. What materials comprise your eco-friendly packaging?
    1. Do NOT suggest a plantable paper or mushroom root to replace styrofoam.
    2. Do NOT suggest unaltered cardboard or any type of plastic, even if the plastic is shredded.
    3. Try to come up with a NEW IDEA that is not discussed in the existing literature on sustainable packaging.
    4. As necessary, explain how the packaging material is created (what is the original material being recycled/reused, how is it being processed/changed/shaped).
  2. Defend and justify your idea by explaining how it would be a practical and feasible replacement for cardboard (external packaging) and styrofoam (internal packaging).

    1. For example, where will you get your supply of materials and is it really feasible to acquire them in a cost-effective manner?

      1. Using bird’s nests as an interior packaging alternative to styrofoam sounds great in theory, but in practice, it would present an enormous feasibility problem. How could you cost-effectively harvest nests, clean the nesting materials of waste, and simply find enough nests on a continual basis to meet demand? Having individuals run around the forest each spring finding nests is not practical. Zoos would only provide a very limited supply. These are examples of feasibility issues that would make this idea impractical.

  3. Explain any environmental or consumer benefits to using your packaging.

    1. The best way to look for environmental and consumer benefits to check your product against the Sustainability Checklist found at http://www.pac.ca/ePromos/promos/pac0945/pac0935-checklist-structural.pdf

  4. How should Delta make consumers aware of their sustainable packaging efforts?

    1. What media should they use and how should the message be conveyed?

    2. Would you recommend that they build an entire marketing campaign around their packaging, or be less blatant in communicating the information?

    3. Justify your thoughts and recommendations.

Delta is especially interested in packaging ideas that would make use of waste materials!

NOTE – this is your chance to be creative! The packaging idea you develop does NOT have to have to exist yet – that’s kind of the point to this exercise. Don’t suggest different forms of cardboard – the idea is to replace cardboard and Styrofoam packaging.

As you develop your idea(s), consider the primary function of faucet packaging. External packaging protects the faucets in shipping and has to be stackable for storage on the warehouse and store shelves. Internal packaging is used to keep multiple pieces of an item from damaging each other and banging together in transit. Proper positioning of the pieces may also be helpful if you want consumers to see what the faucet looks like through a plastic window, though most faucet package boxes use cardboard on all sides.

Submission Process:

  1. If you do outside research that is used to justify your ideas, or which is helpful in describing the processing of your material, cites your sources using APA style both within the body of your response and at the end in the reference section.

  2. If you simply read some articles about sustainable packaging to learn more about this concept, but you don’t use that information directly in your post, you don’t need to cite that source.
