Research-Based Position Paper

As you become a leader in integrating technology into curriculum and programs in a preK-12 school or school district, at some point you will no doubt need to convince others in the school and/or district of the value of using a certain educational technology for strengthening or transforming teaching and learning. An important part of making such recommendations will be providing evidence from scholarly literature, including quantitative studies, of the benefits of a particular educational technology’s usage and how the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

With this in mind, your task is to write a position paper to convince your principal and/or the school board to purchase a specific type of educational technology for your school. The technology you choose can be implemented school-wide or targeted at a specific grade level/subject area.

For example, you may want to implement a 1:1 initiative with laptops or tablets to improve student access to learning materials outside of the school day, or implement GSuite to improve students’ writing skills, or build a Maker Space for students to practice critical thinking and problem solving.

To complete this assignment, you will search the library databases and the Web for four scholarly articles, including a quantitative research study, to be used as evidence in your position paper. In writing your position paper, you should both synthesize and critique the articles you use.

Selection of Topic:

Your topic must be narrowed to include the educational technology and the desired educational outcome or the instructional problem that use of the technology will address (Do not, however, research increased motivation since motivation is probably not, alone, enough to convince others to spend money on a technology.)

Be sure to specify which grade/level(s) and/or subject areas you are targeting or if it is a school-wide implementation.

You may not write about the software you reviewed in 600.

Research a topic that interests you.

Be sure to clarify how you use the term technology. Are you referring to hardware, a software program, or the use of a peripheral piece of equipment?

Selection of Articles:

The articles you choose should be about learning a language. You should find at least four scholarly articles that support your topic:

  • At least one should be an empirical research study.  Not all topics will have an empirical research study to support them—you must find a topic for which an empirical study has been conducted.

  • At least three if not all of the articles should be accessed through the UMUC library databases.

  • One of the articles may be from the free Web, but it must be scholarly, i.e., any article found on the free Web must meet the criteria for scholarly articles. If you have any question about the appropriateness of an article you find on the free Web, ask the instructor for approval.

  • If possible, find articles that address both effectiveness and limitations of the technology’s use for advancing student learning.

Writing the Position Paper:

Write a short position paper (4-5 double-spaced pages) presenting your arguments for adopting the educational technology for the instructional purpose you have selected.

You must include evidence from your four scholarly sources with correct in-text citations and a reference list in APA style. You may also include evidence and examples from education (trade) journals, but there is no requirement to do so, and those articles must be in addition to the four scholarly sources.

Remember to consider the following points:

Make sure your topic is narrow enough to develop a concise, coherent position paper. For example, a topic such as using instructional technology to enhance teaching or learning, is far too broad a topic for this assignment.

Your audience consists of other educators, including teachers and administrators. It also includes school board members

In using evidence from your scholarly sources to support your position, make sure to examine those sources critically (since your audience may read them and note their flaws). As you develop your arguments, include a brief discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of the article you are using as evidence and any research it presents (for example, does the article present good examples of the use of the educational technology in the classroom? how do those examples relate to teaching in your classroom or future classroom and how would they reinforce or strengthen student learning?)

Use the data and analysis of that research to support your position.

If the article includes empirical research, make sure to discuss any flaws you saw in the research conducted (bias, sample size, context of the study, use or not of a control group], particularly if the author of the article does not mention these. Your audience may note and question these flaws, so you need to answer them in presenting your position.

Organize your thoughts and keep in mind that you are not summarizing the research; you are synthesizing the research to support your main ideas.

Quote from the research to support your claim or research question.

Do not use first (I) or second (you) person in your paper.

Use standard, academic English and write in the present tense.

Paper Format:

  • 4-5 pages, double-spaced.
