Discussion question : The prompts from the second and third weeks of the course asked you to practice applying research by experts in children’s literature studies to your own close-reading and analyses of the materials. During the next three weeks, the accompanying essays will teach you how to (1) identify the various parts of a text and (2) explore how storytelling and meaning-making happen differently based on a book’s formatting. Lawrence Sipe is regarded as an all-around expert on picturebooks, and Joe Sutliff Sanders is frequently cited for his chaperoning theory.

For your fourth Reading Response, choose one of the picturebooks you read for this week and, using the concepts outlined by Sipe and Sanders, thoroughly analyze its formatting. Once again, try using the following structure in your Reading Response if you are new to writing literary analysis.

  • Claim

  • Close-reading to support your claim

  • Analysis, which makes explicit connections between your close-reading and claim

  • Discussion

Use the week reading: Sipe and Sanders to discuss the significance, or “Sow what?”, of your claim.
