ESSAY #1 TOPIC -- ENGLISH 1301 Online

HCC – FALL 2018

Write a well developed narrative paper – topic: describe a single, specific childhood event or experience you had prior to the age of 12 years old where you learned a lesson (length 750-1,000 typed words). Be sure to narrow your topic to one particular event (a single moment in time). You are required to incorporate a specific thesis in the introduction paragraph, to utilize specific details in the body paragraphs, and to include at least one specific extended example in each body paragraph that supports the idea you present in your topic sentence. You are also required to follow the rules in the Essay Writing Guidelines handout posted in the MyWritingLab Document Sharing list. For this assignment, it is appropriate to utilize first person, but try to avoid beginning each sentence with “I” to make your paper stronger. You also need to mention the exact age you were when the experience occurred in the introduction paragraph. The introduction paragraph also needs to indicate the event that occurred (your single moment in time), as well as the lesson you learned as a result of this experience. Refer to the sample introduction paragraph posted in the Document Sharing list in mywritinglab.

Be sure to use MLA Style format and proofread carefully for grammar errors. You are required to utilize courier new 12 point font. Remember to refer to the Essay Writing Guidelines handout since you will be graded on how well you follow these specific writing rules. Refer to the MLA style setup hand-out I have posted in the mywritinglab Document Sharing list as a guide for how to properly set up your documents for this assignment (and all other writing assignments for the course).

I will be assigning a partner to you for peer review work and will email these assignments to you online via email. You will conduct a peer review of another student’s work and submit it to both your partner and me via email. Students will use the HCC Canvas class email feature to send work to their partners (and copy the email to me). Further instructions for this procedure will be posted online. I will also post the due dates in each individual mywritinglab assignment dropbox, so refer to the dates/details in your list of mywritinglab assignments to keep up with your homework due dates. You also need to refer to the E1301 Online Course Schedule of Assignments handout for due dates related to this major essay assignment. All due dates are posted on the E1301 Online Course Schedule of Assignments, but I am listing them here for your reference as well:

Essay 1 Partial Rough Draft Due: 9/24/18

Essay ‘Full’ Rough Draft (750-1,000 typed words) Due: 10/1/18

Essay 1 Peer Review with Instructor Assigned Partner Due: 10/4/18 [please note this is a ‘Thursday’]

Essay 1 HCC tutor AND MyWritingLab Tutor Marked Drafts Due: 10/8/18

Please Note: To receive full credit for this assignment, you need to post the partial rough draft, the peer review, the ‘full’ rough draft, both “marked” drafts from the Tutoring Centers (Pearson-the MyWritingLab tutoring service) and the HCC Online Tutor (Upswing), and the final draft (saved in Microsoft Word format). Please note: I cannot open documents saved in Word 2007 format – if you are using Word 2007, you need to save your documents as “Word for Windows 97-2003 document”. If you have saved your document properly, the file extension will change from “docx” to “doc”. I cannot open documents with files extensions of ‘wps’, ‘dot’, ‘pages’, or ‘lnk’. Look at the filename of your document when you post it and confirm it is ‘doc’ format; if it is not, you must save your work again and resubmit the proper format.

Your assignment will be broken into steps, so post each corresponding component in your MyWritingLab Assignment Dropbox per the designated due dates in both MyWritingLab AND the E1301 Online Course Schedule of Assignments handout. Full details on how to post each individual assignment appear in MyWritingLab in the individual assignment instructions.

To view your assignments in MyWritingLab, log in at http://www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com/northamerica/mywritinglab/ ; then click on the Assignments tab; then click on the ‘view assignments by month’ tab; then click on the link of the title of the assignment you wish to view; then read all instructions in the assignment dropbox. All deadlines will be posted on the E1301 Online Course Schedule of Assignments handout as well so be sure to keep up with the due dates.

I have posted links in mywritinglab to both tutoring services. I have also posted an instruction handout in the mywritinglab Document Sharing list of how to submit your ‘full rough draft’ to the mywritinglab (Pearson) tutors. Please view the video posted on the Upswing login page for details on how to use the Upswing HCC online tutoring service. You are required to submit your full rough draft of essay 1 to both services. The ‘full’ rough draft of Essay 1 (750-1,000 words) is due on 10/1/18 and this is the date you need to submit your rough draft to both tutoring services to allow timely feedback.
