My Artifacts Annotated Bibliography:

Final Project. Class: Creativity: Paint and Mixed media. 2017.

In this artwork, Vk’s portrait uses acrylic and regular gel gloss to capture and express the emotions and expressions of human moments. She draws inspiration from the creation of art in expressing emotions through human portraiture in ways that provoke the thought and emotions of different individuals. By exploring happiness, helpless and despair, her work uses bright colors and dark shadows with intention of drawing in viewers as witnesses while creating associations of thoughts and emotions. Her audiences can easily relate to the paintings since the same emotions are felt among people on a daily basis. Moreover, the brightly painted portraits provoke the feelings of the audience as well as feel attractive to the eye leading to a powerful connection.

I chose this work because it is a good example of my ability to express my ideas well through my painting skills in a clear way. I use painting to discuss the topic, not a paper, because I think I will reach more audiences in this art ear. This is exactly what I want to get to know more super powered people who like drawing as much as I do.

Project 1. Class: Visual Art Workshop: Hybrid Art. 2018.

In this artwork, Vk well uses collage and acrylic combined with real bird feathers in order to reflect a vivid canvas board, shows how the animals are influenced by ocean pollution. And indirectly, she shows the severity of the impact of pollution on human health and resources. Her work uses a seagull who ate too much marine garbage and eventually caused died to explore how Marine pollution is a problem that directly affects the balance of Marine life and nature; finds out the animal were just the latest of a mounting tally of victims claimed by plastic and trash pollution of the ocean.

I chose this work because it highlights my social value. I can through my art to remind people to protect the marine environment, and revert a home for marine animals to live on. Make use of art, I will reminding people to always understand that littering conduct is harmful and people should always look out for ethical acts among themself when going to beach and taking a boat trip.

Portfolio of Interventions. Class: Interdisciplinary Arts. 2018

In this work of photography combined with painting, Vk expresses that every object in life can be a work of art. Using a lamp and a transparent balloon to get involved in a painting, she creates a three-dimensional layer over a two-dimensional painting. The hole in the photo is actually the reflection of the lamp on the balloon. And some mirror reflections of her holding the phone. By intervening, all creatures appear to be trapped in a spherical prison. The two symmetrical holes are like doors, visible but never able to get out. Her works reflect a creature's grief, imprisonment, as well as her helplessness trapped by troubles in real life. Her work tells that art needs to be analyzed with an eye toward how it helps us share, interact, and participate with one another.

I chose this work because it successfully confirms my ability to combine art and technology. I firmly believe that I am an artist who can turn everything in life into art.

Final Project. Class: Visual Art Workshop: Hybrid Art. 2018.

In this work, Vk studies special groups of people in China engaged in state performances and state protection. She Interviews and learns about their daily lives and dedication. Her work brings two kinds of people who sacrifice for Chinese national treasures. One is national Beijing opera actress and the other is national panda keeper, both special people who can't go home for the holidays and stick to their jobs. Her work uses 2D acrylic paint and 3D paper machine mask shows how they are ordinary but quietly devote. She also shows their super bitter mind and speaks for them in an artistic way helps them to be concerned and respected.

I chose this work because it well demonstrates that I have the strong ability to publicize the profound Chinese culture through my works of art, also proves that I have the ability to use my skills learned from class to help those special people get attention and lead society to thank those strange people who have made contributions to the majority.

Portfolio of Actions. Class: Interdisciplinary Arts. 2018

In this video, Vk makes a very interesting experiment to share good luck, happiness and love. She wears a special outfit in front of the shop without speaking, so the strangers could not tell her race, age and appearance. In this case people need to decide whether to accept her chocolate or not. She also interferes with people's judgment with strange movements, such as feeding chocolate to the statue of liberty, a mailbox and a car. The experimental results are some people take her chocolate and say “thank you”, some rejected her and say “No”, and others look at her differently. In fact, she is actually a good person, like most people who enjoy sharing food and happiness. Her experiment called on people not to judge a person by his or her appearance because they are born equal, regardless of gender or race.

I chose this video because it proves that I have good idea and the guts to go out into society and accept the acceptance and rejection from different groups of people. And also proves my ability for taking video and edit video. Expands my scope of finding a job in the future.

Final Project. Advanced Visual and Media Workshop: Studio Art in Rome. 2018.

In this work, Vk demonstrates a combination of reality and surrealism by using Photoshop techniques. She uses images to remember things, good or bad, which are all precious experiences. Visiting Italian buildings such as churches, Colosseum and museums inspires her work. Her work uses photo conversion and mixed media to combine herself with ghosts. Using Photoshop techniques to creates a dark, surrealist still image: a god of death drives a yellow taxi, the numerous bats flying out of his mouth grab hotel guests and swallow them into his stomach.

I chose to use this piece for my portfolio because it highlights my imagination

As an artist, imagination is an important element. It gives me an advantage in my job because graphic design is exactly what I want to do in the future; imagination can help me to design satisfactory logos and posters.

Final Chapbook. Class: Creative Writing: Poem. 2018.

In this chapbook, Vk eight poems in a unique style of writing. Using her study abroad experience to become a little author. Through continuous practice of writing in English, she successfully reflected her basis life story by reading environmental pollution news and narrative films. She writes not only a dream of her childhood but also describes her mood after coming to Seattle, curious, happy, sad, home missing, hope and gratitude. Using circular symbols to represent her infinite life cycle, also using blue and yellow color to represent the two most important people in her life in 2017, her boyfriend and her. She learned from Sleeping in the Dictionary that special languages can also be identified and published, thus creating a word "Raincity" refer to “Seattle” in her own poem. The whole chapbook expresses her attitude towards life that is to be a better self.

It is important to include this chapbook in my portfolio because it's a great representation of how the IA classes have directed me toward creating languages. The creation of this chapbook sparked my interest in language and visual impact. It proves that I am not only good at pure art but also good at writing.

Final Chapbook. Class: Creative Writing: Prose. 2018.

In this prose chapbook, Vk uses a diary to track her life story and her feelings about the current social situation. She collects, identifies and accommodates the craziest ideas from her social life. She incorporated elements of poetry into prose, with the aim of strengthening her story and attracting the trust of the audience. It helps the reader take a break before moving on to the next chapter, allowing the audience to observe the summer and her life in a fascinating way. Friendly uses white spaces to makes the whole chapbook easier to read, and added images to the chapbook as an effective way to illustrate important information or give a decorative accent of art in writing. She made it be the most decorative display of the Chapbook since the rest of the document would be interested transmitting her thoughts as the author.

I choose this chapbook because it is a worthy demonstration of my learning skills. The combination of poetry and prose I learned before proves that I have a strong ability to accumulate and apply, which is also what I need in my life.

My Experiences & skills:

I have been a painting artist for a long time and my confidant that my skills and the ability to be creative would match the needs and the requirements of your school. Ever since I became an artist, I have been creating different forms of arts, from the painting to the Photoshop. I took part in the Advanced Placement Art and had several awards in China. By the time I went through the University, I did graphic design for company of Cascadia Climate Action in September 2016. I provided design inspiration; produced advertising slogan and logo for they're climate program. Also I did logo design for company Conveyor Group Headquarters in Aug 2016 and they still using my beautiful design now. I knew that my future was destined towards graphic design and I dreamt that I would work on more pieces.

I deeply went through design, color and painting theory. Several of my works were selected for many shows including the Charity Art Show, and this was the most prominent art show in the West China. My work revolves around people, environmental protection, psychology and life. I also do ceramic, printmaking, environmental design and improvisation performance. I have a unique taste with color, and I enjoy using color to express my mood. I am perfect at the painting of surrealist themes (life drawing), I have some passion in the life-like picture.

My other skills include the acrylic painting with mix media collage, and as I mentioned, Photoshop skills are the best in the pile of my works. I have the unique abilities in doing video and do the shapes and any cubes that would be required by your school. I have the unique ability to successfully mix painting with technology. I am an artist who can turn everything in life into art.

Mini-portfolios on Diversity & Equity AND Collaboration & Leadership:

In the past two years, I have a lot of leadership and collaboration experiences in the learning of IAS, especially in some performance class and study abroad program. I shared my ideas with other people and they acknowledged that I had a valuable knowledge and understanding of situations from a different perspective. In artwork and creative work, there is a need to collaborate with other people and brainstorm of the answers because a sole individual can easily get stuck. I maintain a strong relationship with other my people and other leadership, which helps me in building strong teams. These experiences include my ability in leading others with one goal, subliming the conception, and help others achieve our final goal. I always look forward to motivating and influencing people so that social positive impact is made in the lives of others.

To better evince my ability of leadership and collaboration, I particularly choose a final performance that I have done in The Art of Performance class in the spring quarter of 2018. The performance entitled “Whistle” was a final show aiming to reflect what we learned during the class. The whole performance over 15 minutes and is collaboration is shown in jazz, ballet, and modern dance, performed by four girls from Asian. I recommended myself as the leader because I had four years of dancing experience, and as a leader, I choreographed the whole 15 minutes dance movement with a perfect combination of the Water modern dance and basic ballet that we learned in class with the Korean pop jazz dance mixed together. In the selection of music, I guide team members to each bring a song that is meaningful to them and encourage them to vote for a final pick. Performance is excellent with full entry and exit in ballet technique began by whistling to the audience with our backs, including two sexy solo dances, which had a great success and performed on behalf of UWB at the Cascadia Theater. This success was largely due to my encouragement to one of the team members, who encouraged her to challenge the solo performance for three minutes and accompanied her to practice outside the school for a day. This experience proves that I have a very strong appeal, accurate and effective in terms of leadership and guidance.

The second evidence experience is a study abroad program: Interdisciplinary Studio Art & Italian Culture 2018 in Italy this summer. The most interesting part of this program is to travel to visit the art and sculpture museum in Rome. As a teaching assistant, I played an important role among the 14 students. Managing people in unfamiliar languages and environments is not easy but a fun thing to do. I had to apply good leadership skills so that the group is leading feel comfortable and their needs are addressed despite language differences. For example, Uber is illegal in Rome and taxis are rare, and when I learned we needed to get to the Colosseum on our own the next morning, I offered to reserve a taxi before the day in advance. Although no one agreed with me at that time, I convinced everyone with years of study abroad experience. It proves impossible to reach that destination on time if the reservation is not made in advance. This also let me had a chance to helped and managed the pre-packing artwork set up for MAXXI Museum during our studies. These special experiences have greatly enhanced and proved my leadership, persuasion and cooperation abilities because I helped others take shortcuts and enrich my life. My experience has also enhanced my skills in problem solving and influencing other people to believe that all things are possible as long as there are some commitments. While studying in Rome, I came to understand sharing information openly as a leader make other individuals gain trust and creative collaboration.

In conclusion, I have been able to participate and lead in The Art Performance Class, which proves my strong leadership and guidance skills. I encouraged a group member to participate in a sole performance and I accompanied her for a competition, which was held outside the school. My study in abroad has enabled me gain experience in problem solving, cooperation and effective leadership. Like a leader, I came to understand trust could be gained through openly sharing information and creating collaboration.

Mini-portfolios on Critical and creative thinking:

It is an undeniable fact that in life people are confronted with situations that require them to make decisions, which affect both themselves and the people around them. To make such decisions, it is imperative that the decision maker possesses most if not all-critical and creative thinking skills. Personally, being inquisitive, confident in reasoning and truth seeking, I believe I possess essential critical and creative thinking skills that include interpretation, analysis, inference, evaluation, explanation and self-regulation. I have always applied these skills together with others in making decisions and understanding different situations around me.

Earlier in school, for example, my history teacher asked an essay about whether the United States was right to use the atomic bomb on Japan’s Hiroshima and Nagasaki. My interpretation of the situation told me that US needed to act. Analysis of the situation showed that, even though the US had to act, atomic bomb was too dangerous choice of weapon because of the dangers it posed both at the time and the future. The inference was therefore the fact that US was wrong to employ nuclear weapon. Being non-United States I am; I was biased and therefore ignored some facts surrounding the situation around the atomic bombings. I therefore selected to conclude that United States was right to use the atomic bombs on both Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which means that my self-regulation skill of critical and creative thinking failed me.

Currently however, the skills are already matured, and I can freely and competently arrive at a reasonable decision out of a situation. For example, last quarter I wrote an economic essay on whether President Roosevelt’s new deal was the best to bring the US out of the 1929 economic and financial crisis. Through interpretation of all facts, the conclusion was straightforward that the new deal was what the economy needed at the time. Keynesian economics had proven the classical economists wrong on the idea of government not overly involving itself in economic matters. Secondly, people had lost their investments, jobs had crashed, and many Americans had been reduced to beggars. It was imperative therefore for the government to be fully involved in saving its people. Even though some of the policies of the deal did not work as expected and that the government had over-borrowed at the end of it all, President Roosevelt had no choice other than coming up with the new deal. It is, therefore, my interpretation, analysis, drawing inferences, evaluating facts, explaining them and being self-regulatory about the situation at the time that lead me to conclude that the new deal was what the US needed at the time.

This essay has some very strong moments and draws on projects that seem to have good potential for demonstrating your Critical Thinking skills. I especially liked your comments about the expanded perspective you developed through your work on these assignments. Well done!

As you move into your discussions of the artifacts themselves, you do imply how these projects relate to CT, but don't always go far enough to make the connections clear: you also need to specifically detail how and why these exemplify your application & mastery of that skill. In discussing these projects you tend to summarize the historical events a bit more than your own critical thinking process in working through various perspectives and theoretical approaches.

Finally, there's no clear conclusion here. The closing section would be stronger if you mentioned the implications of your CT skills to your own professional or personal goals. Keep in mind that this portfolio isn't just about the past, but also about your FUTURE. Overall, you’re on the right track – this just needs a little more fine-tuning.

Mini-portfolios on Interdisciplinary Research + Writing & Communication:

The past four years in IA have witness my great improvement in interdisciplinary researching and writing abilities. Specifically such abilities include my engagement in a wide array of knowledge, such as marketing and architectural appreciation, as well as my critical and logical thinking competence developed though learning different subjects and writing my personal assignments. Particularly the idea flow that starts from explaining the general situation and then moving onto more systematic details is the one of the most significant skills and abilities that I have developed over the past four years in IA. My skills in intercultural communication are also significantly improved which further promotes my critical thinking ability and open-mindedness.

To better evince this point, I particularly choose and compare two research papers that I have written in my second and fourth year respectively. The first paper entitled “Research on Streaming Media Industry ---from the case of Spotify” was an assignment aiming to discuss mass media and how theories in mass media are exemplified or refuted in the case of Spotify. I chose Spotify to analyze because it is a representative of AI technology application and I myself have been an old user of it. In this paper, I devoted the overwhelming major sections to explain Spotify and analyze why it could be that successful. The strategies Spotify employed to communicate audience constituted the focus of the whole assignment, which is obvious for me now that it was a digression. The assignment did not get a satisfactory grade in the end either. The feedback that Spotify maybe is not a good example and there was not enough theories supporting my argument from my lecturer is very helpful for my further improvement for the following assignment. If I had a second chance to do this assignment now I would figure out the assignment requirements first and make sure what is expected in the assignment before writing it. Also as my academic and research abilities have grown these years, I would be able to refer to more prior studies to support my argument instead of merely stating what I think.

The second paper, under the name “Comparing Hagar Qim in Malta and Bird Nest National Stadium in China” was an assignment written in my last year. Hagar Qim in Malta and Bird Nest National Stadium in China were chosen for my research because they are examples of architectures constructed at completely different historical periods: Hagar Qim has been existing even before century while Bird Nest is the product in the 21st Century and thus I assumed that the comparison would be more interesting and reveal how the advancement in society and technology can influence architectures construction. These two architectures are also demonstration of western and eastern cultures, and thus the contrast and comparison can reveal the role of culture in architectures. Specifically, the paper is to compare two architectures through analyzing how social practice, economic activity, geography, political institution and environment influence the similarities and difference between them two. In this assignment I provided detailed explanations and contexts for both architectures before starting the analysis part: elaborated on their locations, climatic features of their locations as well as their historical background. This allows readers to have a general overview and has paved way for later analysis and also prepared the readers to be familiar with these two architectures. I managed to illustrate my ideas clearly though focusing on all aspects that are required to analyze and citing prior studies to justify my arguments.

I particularly chose these two papers for three reasons. Firstly, they are the evidences of my researching and writing abilities at different time periods. The one analyzing Spotify was written in second year when I just started to write a full and complete paper by myself and when I was still novel in this regard, whereas, the one about the two architectures was in my fourth year when I have become more competent and confident about how to write a good research paper. Secondly, these two papers were the best assignment of the year when they were written. Spotify one is one the best assignment of when I was sophomore and the architecture one gets the highest score of my fourth year till now. Thirdly, mass media and architectural appreciation are two vivid examples of interdisciplinary studies and they are also my favorite courses too.

In addition to my improvements in writing and research, I have also made progress in critical thinking and developing an open mind. This point is particularly evinced in my performance in the course of intercultural communication. Before taking this course, I am living with my comfortable zone and have been very proud of the culture from my home country. In this course the lecturer asked our preferences about food, music, etc., as well as encouraged us to talk about the stereotypes we have been hold against other cultures, which allows me to realize that there are so big differences in us and that people are produced by cultures and opinions are oftentimes under the influence of cultures. By this it means that what we think can be biased. The tricky part is that not many people are aware of the facts and become narrow-minded and opinionated. The core value of intercultural communication is to accept differences and encourages people to think from different perspectives, which also equip me with critical thinking ability. The logical, critical thinking ability and open-mindedness are significant for my future study and work since they allow me to be objective and competent to express my ideas.

Such progress in interdisciplinary research, writing competencies and intercultural communication abilities is helpful for my future study and work since I can now express my ideas and opinions in an objective, logical and critical way.
