Running Head: ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF AIR TRANSPORT

Towards a Sustainable Future:

The Environmental Impact of Air Transport

Problem Statement

The air transport industry is witnessing drastic growth over the past decades in regions throughout the world. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the number of passengers flown in 2005 was 2.1 billion, and by 2017 that number has doubled to 4.1 billion. Following current trends in air transport, the number of passengers is predicted to double to 8.2 billion by 2037. Despite the social and economic benefits associated with this growth, it is also accompanied by various environmentally damaging repercussions. The aviation industry is still a major contributor to Earth’s carbon emission. The increased in greenhouse gases and climate change has led respective authorities and organizations to create a sustainable solution to solve this ecological problem. It is therefore, imperative to understand the aviation effects on the environment as well as come up with sustainable methods so as to reduce the overall environmental impacts of this industry.

This paper will be identifying the aviation industry’s role in environmental degradation and its overall impact on aviation safety. The various areas of pollution such as carbon emissions, climate change, noise pollution and air pollution will also be covered. A review of current laws, such as Clean Air Act, and regulations regarding environmental standards set forth by industry regulators to mitigate the impact of aviation on the environment. Exploring sustainable methods and finding solutions to reduce the environmental impact caused by the aviation industry such as biomimetic engineering and use of alternative fuels. Lastly the paper will touch on operational improvements in aviation such as the introduction of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). These will be researched using literature reviews and peer reviewed articles assessed through available online databases such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Lastly, the incorporation of using new technologies will be assessed through a SWOT analysis to determine its potential and feasibility.

Note

Hi, I would need you to ensure that you do not directly quote from articles and paraphrase as much as possible. This assignment is submitted on Turnitin, and the prof is very particular on this. Also I would need you to include research for the following topics. I have provided the title of the sub topics to guide you with the research. The topics and sub topics must be followed because it is being approved by the prof.

Thank you very much!
