Arm Wrestling with My Father

Felix Bermudez

Columbia College

This is an interesting article done exclusively by Brad Manning. Brad Manning reveals the intimate relationship between a son and a father whereby the father does not reveal his love the normal way but through rough contact. This particular contact comes when the father and son engage in sports and wrestling. Manning tries to elaborate that affections can be shown this way in different relationships not only father-son relationship. The author also shows that there are many ways that we as humans can express our affections. This essay does not target any group in particular but it involves all. With this kind of work the writer reveals that relationships can be maintained by involving yourselves in sports like arm wrestling Many human beings believe that love and affection can only be shown by caring, briefing each other tantalizing words or pleasing behaviours but

Manning dismisses that by showing many times in the article father and son relationship maintained through physical contact. The argument I get from this masterpiece is that by means of sports and body contact we can express our feelings to each other. The author has done excellently and has achieved his goal in showing the father-son the relationship also revealing how they evolved as time moved. In the introduction of the story, Brad reveals to the readers how his father and he have been having a physical relationship. Later, the author realizes that through arm wrestling his father got to associate with him. The author, Brad, was defeated by his father in all the fights they were involved in during his young days. He was pleased to losing to his father as he was proud of having a strong father but this feeling slowly fades as times passes by. Brad also includes that as he got to be stronger and better in arm wrestling, his father grew frailer and weaker and Brad tries to emulate his father.

The author tells about a day during college exams when he wrestled with his father but this time Manning was on the winning side and that's when Manning concludes that it is not all about winning sometimes it is better to let go. He gets to understand that his father has been a pillar of their family ensuring that their family was secure and not troubled. With his strong arms, he offered security to the family. Because of his father's strength, Brad felt secure leaving without anxiety when he was around his father. When Manning was leaving for college, his father gave him a warm hug. He was not pleased with it since he was not familiar with it. When Manning took off he felt his father's intimate love but notices that time has passed. Manning grew strength in him that he is scared if he is capable of being responsible same as his father.

The article gains my full support about its content fully. The main theme of the story is about offering affection in a completely different way as in normal situations. It evolves between a father-son relationship the love is shown through arm wrestling, not the normal way like caring, speaking cool words about each other and so many more of emotional feelings than body contact. One thing I fancy is love because it can be shown in many ways based on your choice. I render the theme of this article as valid.
