Adjetivo posesivo after the noun

1st person singular

mío/a

un amigo mío (a friend of mine)

míos/as

unas amigas mías (some friends of mine)

2nd person singular

tuyo/a

un amigo tuyo (a friend of yours)

tuyos/as

unas amigas tuyas (some friends of yours)

3rd person singular
 and plural

suyo/a

una amiga suya (a friend of his/hers /yours/theirs)

suyos/as

unos amigos suyos (some friends of hers/his/yours/theirs)

1st person plural

  nuestro/a

un amigo nuestro (a friend of ours)

nuestros/as

unos amigos nuestros (some friends of ours)

Notice that the 1st and 2nd person plural of the adjetivo posesivo written after the noun are the same as for the adjetivo posesivo written before the noun (nuestro and vuestro).  Also note that the 3rd person singular and the 3rd person plural are expressed by the same word (suyo/a, suyos/as)

You may have noted from the above examples that the adjetivo posesivo written after the noun must always correspond in gender and number to the noun it is referring to (not the subject of the sentence.)  We can use "mío" as an example to demonstrate this:

  • un libro mío   a book of mine

  • una mesa mía  a table of mine

  • dos primas mías   two (female) cousins of mine

  • dos perros míos   two dogs of mine

This type of adjetivo posesivo is used for emphasis. Notice the difference, for example, between the following two sentences:

  • Esta es mi casa.  This is my house.

  • Esta casa es mía.  This house is mine.

Another use for putting the adjetivo posesivo after the noun is it makes it possible to put another determinativo in front of the noun.  For example if someone has two books a good way to express it would be with the adjetivo posesivo after the noun.  You can say:

  • dos libros tuyos    two books of yours

When the adjetivo posesivo goes before the noun you cannot specify that there are two books:

  • tus libros   your books

For the most part the adjectivos posesivos are interchangeable and you can decide if you are more comfortable putting them in front of or after the noun.

Notice the different ways that you now know how to express possession:

  • el libro de María             su libro          el libro suyo

  • la mesa de mi madre      su mesa         la mesa suya

  • los perros de mí             mis perros      los perros míos

  • las tías de tu hermano    sus tías           las tías suyas
