Who is best suited for success in the future? We all know how fast the world is changing around us every day. But what does this really mean for us and our chances of being successful in the future? What do we need to be successful in the future? These are questions that a group of researchers from Columbia University have been trying to answer for more than 10 years. They believe the answer is ‘Learning Agility.’ (Mitchinson, Morris et al, 2014). According to their research, learning agility includes four different aspects. The first is flexibility, which means to be able to adapt to the environment around you, or a willingness to try new things. Think of your own experience. Have you ever been in a completely new situation? What about when you started college, or school?

Learning agility theory suggests that those of us who are able to adapt quickly and take on new ideas are the ones who have the highest chances of success. A second aspect of learning agility theory is a person’s ability to increase their knowledge about their environment. Think about the world today. Knowledge around the world is growing exponentially, that is at a rate that doubles over shorter and shorter periods of time. The effect of this is that nobody can know everything. The ability to find, evaluate and apply knowledge is now more important than remembering knowledge. Knowledge gained through personal experiences and reflecting on those ex periences is also part of this aspect on learning agility. A third and related aspect of learning agility research is the willingness to take risks. Taking risks can refer to taking on new challenges, that is, doing things you are not sure you can succe ssfully do and have never done before. Risk taking can also involve experimenting, or testing out new ideas. Again, without knowing if you will be successful or not. A fourth aspect of learning agility research concerns how you relate to other people. Fo r example, being willing to ask other people for help is an important part of learning. Remember, no one knows everything, and two heads are better than one. So if you are one of those people who never ask for help, the chances are that you are not an ‘agi le learner’. Collaborating with others on different tasks is important because everybody is good at different things.
