Thesis Statement

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is very fascinating as well as a meaningful story that is filled with truth, betrayal, hatred, and deception. Christopher Boone discovers that his neighbor’s dog is dead and whoever killed the dog did so purposefully due to the way it had been murdered, which makes this book a murder novel. In my course paper, I am going to discuss themes that are found in this novel which will include language and communication, the themes of isolation, of fear, of idenitity, of lies and deceit, of truth, and of love. The themes will be discussed in detail within my paper in comparison with the context. Several elements of fictions will also be discussed in the paper and they will include the narrative inadequacy and Christopher Boone’s peculiar innocence.

In Brooks’ book, we find out that Martyn has a difficult and troubled teenage life just like Christopher Boone. He also turns to being a detective so that he can also shape his own experience. Martyn also argues that the detective fiction gives some of the structures that allows Haddon and Brooks to have a first person persona, so that they can make sense of their confusing words. I chose this article on Brooks’ Martyn Pig because it can be used to support the text in context about Christopher during the course of project paper.

Kuppers, P. (2008). Dancing Autism:The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime and Bedlam. Text and Performance Quarterly, 28(1-2), 192-205. doi:10.1080/10462930701754465

In this article, an Associate Professor of English is explaining how the image of autism surrounds us. He states that the diagnosis frequency of the autistic condition is increasing. Kuppers also discusses the performance potential of the autistic condition. According to Kuppers, he says that the book, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time portrays that some people with this condition may be alienated or locked out, however, they may also be brilliant and they are supposed to be represented in society. I have chosen this article because it touchs on the importance of not hiding the ones with autistic conditions for they can be brilliant minded and do wonders that can amaze us.

Ray, S. J. (2013). “Normalcy, Knowledge, and Nature in Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.” Disability Studies Quarterly33(3), 11. https://doi-org.ezproxy.rasmussen.edu/10.18061/dsq.v33i3.3233

By combining disability studies theory and ecocriticism, the author of this article argues that Christopher's disability offers an environmental sensibility and vice versa—Christopher's environmental sensibility shapes his and the novel's critique of disability. According to the article, by never explicitly diagnosing Christopher, author Mark Haddon suggests a disability studies perspective from the outset: the "medical model" of disability is not central to Christopher's own experience of the world. According to the author of this article, the most important way that the novel achieves its message that disability is a social construction is through point of view and using form to critique the dominant novel form: the novel is written from Christopher's perspective, rather than being about Christopher. I have chosen this article because it talks how the character in Haddon’s novel shouldn’t hide who he is.

Sternberg, R. J., & Kaufman, J. C. (1996). Innovation and Intelligence Testing: The Curious Case of the Dog that Didnt Bark. European Journal of Psychological Assessment, 12(3), 175-182. doi:10.1027/1015-5759.12.3.175

In this article, Sternberg and Kaifman argue that intelligence testing is evolving painfully slow every day. There have been several reasons for intelligence testing evolution and there are suggestionsof what can be done to help speed it up. The authors of this article explain how the the intelligence testing can be done. This should allow society to easily identify those individuals with intelligence problems. I have chosen this article because I hope to encourage my audience not to give up on such situations as well as know how to handle the situation.

Wooden, S. R. (2011). Narrative medicine in the literature classroom: Ethical pedagogy and mark haddon's the curious incident of the dog in the night-time.Literature and Medicine, 29(2), 274-96. Retrieved from http://search.proquest.com.ezproxy.rasmussen.edu/docview/928761155?accountid=40836

In this article, Wooden says that he listens to people’s stories, both fictional and real and strives to understand their stories as matters of course. We are also supposed to do that and also see ourselves as part of that field. He goes on to say that in an education course, the students may find it hard to talk about illnesses and disabilities so they tend to avoid it. The reason as to why I chose the article is because it explains in detail how such cases should be handled and how disabilities may be viewed in the medical perspective.
