Legalization of Drugs in the Us

Gore Vidal made assessments of the drug use in the United States and found out that drug is at its highest despite the restrictions it has. He therefore, asserts that legalization of these drugs with a warning of how they affect the bodies of the users will be a better strategy to deal with the issue of drugs and drug abuse. The main issue with drug use is an addiction; Gore stipulates that there is a possibility to stop addiction by legalizing the drugs (Vilad, 1970). Availability of drugs at a cost to the public will give the people the option of deciding what to do with their lives. The American constitution gives its citizens the rights to decide how to live their lives and how to die if they chose as long as they don’t interfere with the rights of other citizens. With this perspective in mind, Gore Vidal believes that people will rationally stay away from drugs once they realize how dangerous it is even when it is readily available.

The United States has most certainly lost the war on drugs as, despite the many arrests and incarceration of drug dealers, the rate of drug use is still high. Legalization of drugs is viewed as an option as it gives the people the choice to use the drugs at a price in a legal way. The advantage of legalization the drug according to Gore is that it can come with a warning, a list of all the side effects the drugs have (Vilad, 1970). According to Gore, people are different in their own unique way, therefore there will always be people who will be addicts and people who will be alcoholics, and he, however, insists that the choice to kills themselves with drugs is a right they have under the American constitution.

There are several reasons why people are against the legalization of drugs, despite the argument put forward by Gore.

First, if people are allowed to use drugs, most of them will, which will lead to a nation full of addicts who are less productive in the country. The GNP of the country will drop drastically and will the economy of the country. From the article, allowing people to use drugs will also lead to the establishment of a nation of zombie due to their dependence on drugs. This wills only happen when people get to know how dangerous drugs are and decide to sue them anyway, which is the basis of Gore’s perspective (Vilad, 1970).

Second, the aspect of the legalization has stiff resistance as it is seen as a way to erode the morals of the people in the society. Although Gore insists that people will have access to drugs at a cost and therefore see no need to commit a crime, this is an assumption that has no basis. With an increase in drug use among the people, there will be a higher crime rate as no everyone will be able to afford the drugs. Drug use also comes with other social issues that erode the morals of the society including irresponsibility, which will result in laxity among the people. The third reason for the opposition of drug legalization is the cost it will have on the country (Vilad, 1970). Drug use is a business also made the fight against drugs business as well. There are several outposts dedicated to fighting drug smuggling and distributing and thousands of employees who are dedicated towards the fight as well particularly the law enforcement.

Drugs should not be legalized by the US government due to the adverse effects it has on the human body.

Reason 1

Drug addiction is the primary side effect of drug use. Once the drugs are made available to the public, the number of drug addicts will increase tremendously (Vilad, 1970). The effects of drug use are diverse. There are both short-term and long-term effects of drug use most of which are devastating. Some of the known side effects of drug abuse include lung and heart conditions, infertility, loss of memory, poor concentration, and brain damage and in some instance cancer. Legalizing the drug will, therefore, open the American people to health risks that can be avoided.

Reason 2

Once the public gets hooked on drugs, the productivity of the workers will be reduced which will subsequently reduce the GNP of the country (Vilad, 1970). Since the US is one of the leading economies a drop of the GNP may affect the whole country and the globe in general. The economy of any country is facilitated by the youths who are young and energetic, however, they account for the largest number of drug users and potential users as well. Once drug use is legalized, this productive population will grow dormant and eventually cost the country a great deal.

Reason 3

The legalization of drugs will also increase drug use among the youths; this will facilitate the erosion of morals in the society as drug use is associated with antisocial behavior such as crime, irresponsible sex, as well as irresponsibility in terms of education and seeking employment.
