ESSAY #2 PROMPT

Instructions

This second essay asks you to write an essay on Guillermo Del Toro’s film, Crimson Peak. Based on our discussions over Botting, Hogle, and King, you will create an essay that focuses on a critical analysis and interpretation of Crimson Peak within the Gothic. Ultimately, the goal of the essay is for you to be able to close-read the film and apply your interpretation to a larger conversation about the Gothic as a whole. I want to see a clear thesis and argument in your essay, not just a summary or an overly opinionated discussion. You will be arguing FOR your analysis and interpretation. For example, you might argue that Crimson Peak’s main character, Edith, is a Modern reinterpretation of the damsel in distress as a Gothic Heroine. You can compare and contrast as well, but be mindful of the length of the essay. You will also be using secondary sources in this essay to help provide context, provide vocabulary, provide a lens, provide counterarguments, and otherwise prove your analysis as a valid contribution to the conversation. You could also talk about rising fears or anxieties being reflected in the film (this could include Modern fears but also historical concerns.) The following is a list of possible lenses, perspectives, and vocabulary that you might be able to use to get you started on your essay:
