Ellen Goodman wrote an article on the issue of commercialization of babies through surrogacy internationally. In her article ‘Womb for Rent,’ she explains that the presence of the industry is due an increased number of women who are ready to hire surrogates to carry their babies. The industry has grown to the benefit of the less privileged women who are ready to be surrogates for a pay. Goodman does not support the idea of surrogacy and sympathizes with the less privileged infertile mothers who are unable to pay for a surrogate. However, she is not comfortable with the idea of people commercializing the baby business where women rent out their wombs to rich women. She terms it as the “dehumanization of childbirth”, (Goodman, 2016).

Goodman says that production of babies began in India and the government tends to refer to it as a growth industry. Also, in America, the same business is carried out. Women, especially Army wives supplement their income by becoming surrogate mothers to wealthy couples. Where the business is banned, like in the European countries. (Goodman, 2016). The baby business has grown internationally where poor mothers seek healthcare services. Surrogate mothers are ready to bear a child for a wealthy couple and accept that the child is not hers. The motivation behind this is that the surrogate mother wants to make a living from it. In one instance a woman said that she bore a child and the cash she got was used to pay for heart treatment of her child, (Goodman, 2016).

It has come to the concern of Goodman about the ongoing business. She does not support the idea of women using their bodies as a way of getting income. She says that when surrogacy happens from a woman to gift a friend, then it can be logical and acceptable. (Goodman, 2016). Most surrogate mothers are in this business due to illiteracy. She even adds that those in the developing countries use their fingerprints to sign into such contracts. It is in rare cases that a person will find a surrogate mother from a wealthy family for the sake of the poor women. Therefore, illiteracy and poverty are significant drivers of the baby making business.

Goodman uses a powerful word when she says that commercialization of babies is like selling them into ‘slavery.’ It is immoral and unethical for women to hire their wombs. (Goodman, 2016). She also cares about the future of the child. She says that some things no matter how good they are should not be sold, (Goodman, 2016). The surrogacy business closely relates to the idea of slavery for wealthy couples.

Selling of women's wombs is the dehumanization of childbirth. Women who carry out this business are the low-income earners who want to supplement their income. Goodman also sympathizes with the infertile ladies bearing the fact that the wealthy women will rarely act as surrogates for the poor women. The commercialization of babies has been termed unethical. It has also been considered that ladies and their children are being sold into slavery for the benefit of wealthy couples.
