Bibliography and Abstract Information

Due 4/14/2019

Abstract: Please follow APA guidelines for how the abstract should be formatted. See here for more information. It should include:

• A running head at the top of the page

• The word “Abstract,” not italicized, bolded, or underlined. It should be centered.

• A concise summary of your paper’s main points. I would recommend writing an outline of your paper first, and using that as a template for your abstract. Given that you will have already obtained your references, you should have a good idea of what your paper’s main points will be.

• If you use any abbreviations or acronyms in your abstract, write them out first and put the acronyms in parenthesis. Example: American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)

• A list of 2-3 keywords at the end of your abstract.

Bibliography (Reference List): Formatted using APA Format. Should read “References” at the top of the page. More information can be found here.

I recommend using a citation manager, such as Zotero or Mendeley, to help with the formatting of your citations.

References should be scientific sources, including peer-reviewed articles, textbooks, and books. Websites may be used, but should not make up the majority of your citations. You should use 8-10 sources at minimum, at least half of which should be peer-reviewed articles.

When completing your literature search, prioritize peer-reviewed scientific literature. You may need to reference websites throughout the course of your paper to support a point (i.e. citing the Dietary Guidelines for Americans), but in general, your paper will be stronger if you can cite scientific literature for the majority of your statements of fact.

The VCU Library has more information about searching for sources.
