Portfolio assessment model

Read the following task description from the portfolio assessment.

Choose 2 pieces of your portfolio work (from the work outlined in the table below) and explain how they have developed your future thinking abilities. (150 words each; maximum of 300 words in total)

  • Make sure you demonstrate your knowledge of the concept or tool represented in the piece of work and its significance to future thinking.

  • Demonstrate how the understanding of the future thinking concepts or tools characterized in this piece of work can help empower you (how might it help you have more control over your own future)? “

To answer this question you need to write an argument of evaluation. These arguments have 2 parts, first, you need to describe what it is you are talking about, and then you need to evaluate it. So, for this assessment you need to:

  1. Describe the tool/ concept

  2. Evaluate it in terms of how it could be useful

Below is another tool which we have not done on the course. Read the argument below and then see if you can explain it to a partner.

The Probability Impact Matrix

The Probability Impact Matrix (PIM) is used to think about trends in the future. It identifies the relationship between two things. First, it shows, from low to high, the chance of a trend happening in the future. This is the probability side. Second, it shows, again from low to high, the effect that the trend will have on society in the future. This is the impact part. By doing this we have six areas to think about. Those trends which are low impact are at the bottom of the chart, but the high impact ones, the ones we are most interested in, are at the top. The PIM allows us to order trends in terms of probability and impact.

By using the PIM we can begin to understand which trends will be most interesting for us. This is useful because, for example, companies could then begin to prepare and plan for those trends which are high impact and are most likely to happen. This is very useful as they might then be able to make plans which can maximize their success in the future.

Some language notes for paragraph 1:

  1. Because this is the descriptive part of the argument verbs are present tenses, mostly present simple, and most are the verb ‘to be’.

  2. There are also significant noun phrases following the following patterns:

    1. Head noun+ preposition, for example, “trends in the future”, “the relationship between two things”, “six areas to think about”

    2. Head noun+ relative pronoun, for example, “the effect that the trend will have on society in the future”, “Those trends which are low impact “

  3. Because the tools are spatial representations of concepts there are some prepositional phrases.

    1. For example, “from low to high”, “at the bottom of the chart”, “at the top”

Some language notes for paragraph 2:

  1. Because this paragraph is evaluating we see different verb forms:

    1. Modal verb+ Verb, for example, “can begin”, “will be”, “could then begin”, “might then be able to make”

  2. Again noun phrases as in paragraph 1

    1. Head noun+ relative pronoun, for example, “those trends which are high impact”, “plans which can maximize their success in the future”
