Midwifery

Out-of-hospital birthing arrangements have become an increasingly common practice in recent years. Mothers are fed up with overpriced hospital bills, lack of control, unnecessary medical intervention and so much more. Why aren’t expecting mothers given childbirth options? It is important for mothers to dictate their own personal birthing experiences as much as possible. That’s where midwifes comes into play, assisted home births gives pregnant mothers the option to be in control, to have a natural birth, and to receive 1 on 1 direction and support. Satisfying, out-of-hospital birthing methods are on the rise despite limited medical care and lack of knowledge on the subject.

Nurse midwives, birthing attendants, are highly renowned for their nurturing and supportive demeanor, that, combined with extensive training places the yearly median salary for this career at $110,370 (O*net, 2019). As indicated, this profession demands patience, listening skills, a caring heart, and the need to help others. That being said the educational need for this job is extensive and should only be completed if you are willing to spend your entire career placing others needs before your own. In order to become a nurse midwife, one must first complete high school, then enroll in either a 2- or 4-year nursing program. Upon completion of the nursing program students need at least one year of experience before they can apply to a 2 - 4-year midwifery program. The last step is to complete a certification exam and maintaining it by renewing your license every 5 years (Nurse Practitioner Schools, 2019).

Advantages of having a midwife present during home births are plentiful however, women should not consider having a home birth if they have a high-risk pregnancy or have had prior cesarean sections. Midwifes are trained professionals and can handle emergency situations at hand; though birthing attendants believe in allowing the birthing process to unfold they will intervene when necessary. On the other hand, when given the opportunity to deliver at home with a midwife a mother has more control over the labor and delivery process, the freedom to regulate or manipulate her surroundings (i.e. candles, soft music) and personalize assistance throughout the entire experience.
