Running head: IMPACT OF PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT 0

Impact of Parental Involvement

Parental involvement can also create awareness about school needs. According to Boonk et al. (2018), parental involvement is essential in understanding the needs of the school. This is only achievable when the parents are involved in the school activities and can, therefore, observe and note the lack of world-class facilities to provide high-quality education to the students. In this case, for instance, the parents can be involved in lodging a complaint to the school boards, the state, and federal government so that the students can get high-quality resources to compete favorably (McNeal, 2014). This involvement may result in the allocation of the resources which boosts the general performance of the students. Parental involvement should, therefore, be advocated to increase awareness about the needs of the school.

Parental involvement offers an excellent opportunity for the parents to provide moral support to students. Research by Bailey (2017) also shows that the performance of students improves due to parental involvement. When parents are involved, it creates a conducive environment for the students to learn as the children can see that their parents are concerned and care about their studies. This teaches the children the importance of education and motivates them to perform better. For example, parents who involve themselves act as a source of support whenever the students face academic, social, and extra-curricular challenges. This enables the students to be disciplined, self-motivated, with high self-esteem.

Parental involvement sets a good example or role model for learners. According to Clifford and Humphries (2018), parental involvement creates a strong relationship between parents, teachers, and the students themselves. Since the parents are so much involved with the teachers, students become afraid of making mistakes. This makes the students self-disciplined while the parents become good role models for the students. The commitment that is displayed by the parents through their involvement is commendable and sets an excellent example to the students as they try to model adult behaviours. Parental involvement, therefore, sets s good example making the parents to be role models to the children.

However, parental involvement can also be a waste a teacher's time, and due to the distraction, that comes with over-involvement. According to Yulianti et al. (2018), some parents take their involvement too far due to helicopter parenting. This is when the parents are always around becoming a distraction since students are usually over excited to see their parents about. The parents might, therefore, take valuable that the teachers could have used to teach the students. The students are undoubtedly distracted by the presence of their parents at the school premises. Teachers might also term this as suffocation and interference with confidentiality issues. Parent involvement can also be a distraction for wasting the teacher's time.
