THE SPECIAL OCCASION SPEECH

DUE DATE: Wednesday, July 3rd

TIME: 4:00 – 5:00 per speaker

ASSIGNMENT: In this speech, you will deliver a special occasion speech (alone or with a partner). The special occasion speeches we discussed in class are:

  • After Dinner Speech (examples: toasts)

  • Speech of Introduction (introduce a speaker, real or imaginary)

  • Speech of Presentation (Present an award)

  • Acceptance Speech (Accept an award)

  • Speech of Tribute (Honor a person)

The speech of presentation and the acceptance speech are your best choices should you work with a partner.

This speech is your opportunity to utilize the combination of skills and experience you have acquired throughout the course. Have fun with it, but remember to utilize strong organization and delivery skills throughout. Be creative!

GUIDELINES:

Pay close attention to the following when preparing your speech:

  • Follow the guidelines suggested by your text (and by your instructor). See chapter 13 and chapter 13 notes.

  • Remember, the purpose of many special occasion speeches are to entertain or honor. Make your speech relevant to the class.

  • You must verbally cite at least one source. Be creative. This can be an inspirational quote, a statistic, or basically anything. Make it relevant.

  • Visual aids are not required, but feel free to be creative. If you are presenting/accepting an award, why not have an award with you? If you are giving a speech of tribute, you might have a photo of the person you are honoring.

  • Delivery: Your delivery will count for this speech. You should have eliminated verbal fillers, have little to no fluency hiccups, make eye contact for at least 75% of the speech, have vocal variety (rate, pitch, volume), and appropriate gestures.

  • Practice, practice, practice!!!

CRITERIA FOR A GOOD FINAL SPEECH:

Entertaining/Relevant to Audience: Regardless of what special occasion speech you choose, you should consider your audience and tailor the message to us.

Clear: Easy to follow, well organized, appropriately signposted, complete.

Well presented: Conversational, interactive, articulate, respectful.

Lasting: MEMORABLE!

NOTE: While you are only required to cite one source, you must cite all relevant facts you use in your speech. If you use outside sources, you still have to cite them.
