Wk. 8. Case #2. 12%. Why CFA is More Successful Than KFC.

The data for the two key brands are highlighted. Here are a few things that stand out when comparing these two brands:

  1. The annual sales for CFA is twice the level of KFC even though KFC has almost twice as many restaurants.

  2. CFA’s sales-per-store are the highest in the industry, far out-pacing KFC.

  3. CFA is adding new units while KFC is reducing the number of their units.

Clearly, CFA is doing far better than KFC. What is going on here? Why the big difference?

Here are some possible things that need to be investigated (some may be important and some may not):

  1. KFC is a part of a multi-brand publicly held corporation while CFA is a privately owned and does not have interests in diversified businesses.

  2. KFC uses a traditional franchise network system similar to what is used by many other quick service restaurants. CFA has a unique franchise system where the unit managers are not franchise owners and operate with rules much different from those that apply to traditional restaurant franchise owners.

  3. Since KFC expanded much more quickly than did CFA in the 1970s and 1980s the average age of the restaurants may be much older for KFC.

  4. The target markets appear to be different, with CFA giving more emphasis to families with young children.

  5. KFC’s advertising budget is estimated to be 4 times that of CFA.

  6. CFA adds a small controlled number of new units each year while KFC’s inventory changes may be up or down.

There are many other differences—you will need to determine the key differences and what causes each brand to deliver those positive and negative differences.

Write a secondary research report (this means to use Cover Page, Table of Contents, Executive Summary, graphics, sub-heads, in-text cites, and references). Provide brief back-ground data about each brand followed with a list of 10 key differences. The final section will have a detailed analysis of the three most important business differences. The goal for your analysis is to clearly explain why CFA is doing much better than KFC.

The manuscript portion of the document with graphics will have 5 to 7 pages. You references list will include at least 6 quality items.
