Module 2 Discussion

Provide a basic summary of the 3 – 5 main points of the article Effective Project Management for Strategic Innovation and Change in an Organizational Context (in Doc Sharing) and demonstrate that you have a thorough understanding of the subject matter being discussed.  In the final paragraph, you are required to provide your assessment of the article and the main premises presented in the article.  Some areas you may address in your discussion question summary include:

  • Summarize at least five main points contained in the article (no more than 5).

  • How is the information presented in the article useful in the real world?

  • How can you apply the knowledge attained in the article?

  • Compare and contrast the information in the article to the PMBOK® Guides body of knowledge.

  • Summarize your main “take away” from the article.

You will be graded based on content, composition, grammar, analysis and level of critical thinking in addition to the substantive nature of your follow-up post.  Most importantly, since this is a PMI© based course you “are expected” to integrate the Project Management Body of Knowledge® (PMBOK®) into your discussions.

The proposed article on “Effective Project Management for Strategic Innovation and Change in an Organizational Context” discusses the connection between the types of projects being conducted and the appropriate approach to their individual and unique circumstances. Kenny (2003) brings up the question: What processes are the most appropriate to apply to different types of projects? The strategic implementation should match the type of project. Kenny writes “Project goals should link directly to the strategic goals. The nature of projects varies with the type of goals it is trying to achieve. Project management processes need to be chosen so that they match the nature of the project” (Kenny, 2003).

“Projects are a means of implementing strategy” (Kenny, 2003). Great attention should be given to planning the project, and to selecting which implementation tactic will be used. Kenney discusses different types of projects regarding their varying levels change, innovation, and immediate stages of development. The goal of the project should match the goal of the strategy used. More complex activities will require more attention to detail when implemented and planned.

Kenny cites De Wit and Meyer (1999) as identifying two types of strategic change: evolutionary (incremental or continuous change) and revolutionary (radical change). Proponents of radical change are of the thinking that an organization is always in motion, so rapid change is needed to overcome this. Proponents of incremental change state that it has better success in the long run because people have the opportunity to be openminded and willing to accept the change, rather than having it forced upon them. Those that are for continuous change believe that radical change will only produce short-term results. The corporate culture will have much to do with the approach to change implementation.

A successful project manager will learn over time, through lessons learned and best practices witnessed, which approach will best suit the project at hand. Projects can be so different- a construction project for a home built several times over will vary greatly from a project intended to develop technical solutions. A PM should use the resources at hand, and often rely on area expertise to best develop a plan of action.
