Text/Film PAPER Assignment due Sunday 9/29:

View the film “Smooth Talk” (1985) directed by Joyce Chopra. The film -- an adaptation of the Oates short story (1966) is in the “MOVIES/Video F’19” section of our content area. Submit a Paper that includes a response to (1), (2), (3) and (4) below in any sequence you wish but in a Paper format.

(1) You chose a question for the “Text DB” assignment. Does your answer apply to the cinematic version? Describe a cinematic scene that does or does not uphold your response to the question. In the description of the scene mention an element of mise en scene that you believe particularly contributes to the effectiveness of the scene.

(2) Compare and contrast the two endings of the story and film. What is a possible difference in a reader’s reaction to the textual end as opposed to a viewer’s reaction to the cinematic end? Are both endings ambiguous (which would mean the director kept the integrity of the Oates unresolved ending)? Or is the text ending more satisfying to the reader than the cinematic ending might be to the viewer -- or vice versa?

(3) Does the film back up your chosen theme, i.e., is the text you chose for your theme represented in the film adaptation?

(4) Read “Three Strategies for Expanding the Short Story into a Feature Film” posted in 3rd Week September folder. [There is also a copy of the strategies in Course Documents.] Which one of the Strategies do you believe belongs to the Chopra film adaptation of the Oates story?

PAPER SHOULD BE 1-4 PAGES DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY. Title your Paper with your chosen strategy and Theme (example: Interweaving/Arnold). See the MLA format for the first page of your Paper. MLA format is in Course Documents.

Submit your Oates/Chopra Paper via the SUBMIT PAPER HERE portal of the content area before midnight of 9/29.

This Paper will serve as your writing diagnostic and as such will be graded on content only. However, you must still concentrate on your writing so that I receive your maximum effort as a true indication of your compositional ability. If your writing does require my editorial comments, those edits, corrections and suggested revisions must be reflected in your future assignments that will be graded on writing and content.
