Instructions

A comparison-contrast essay “typically involves detailing the similarities or differences between two items, or subjects, on key criteria” (360). It 1.) considers subjects that can be compared; 2.) it has a clear purpose; 3.) it fairly examines similarities, differences, or both; 4.) it considers a sufficient number of significant characteristics and details; and finally, 5.) it makes a point (Ch. 14, p. 360).

With these 5 qualities of comparison-contrast writing in mind, write an essay that

compares and/or contrasts one aspect found in two generations.

So, for example, you may choose to compare and contrast music genres found in the World War II generation and in today’s modern era.

Or, maybe you want to observe family values echoed in your parents’ generations versus yours.

Or, perhaps you decide to compare and contrast generational attitudes on gender.

*Like the previous paper, there are countless possibilities that fall under this prompt.

Your thesis must directly set out to address the similarities or differences between two items or subjects. The body paragraphs must support the thesis statement’s mission. Be specific and offer vivid and direct descriptions. Keeping your audience in mind, remember to inform, entertain, and educate your reader.
