The Skeleton Paper

Introduction

Books are generally a gateway to another universe through written word. Despite the fact that some books can successfully challenge the perception of everything, it is important to understand that others can inspire a whole generation. It is true that if it was not for books, much of the entertainment that people experience today could not be there. Different from media, a book is limited to the writer’s abilities only. Banning of books therefore is done based on the content that is contained with pages (DiMarco, p368). That means that there is always a reason as to why a book is banned. This essay will present a brief history of the reason as to why books should be banned, brief history of book banning, reasons as to why Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone should be banned, and the association for Harry potter banning to other contemporary book bans.

Brief History of Book Banning

Individuals are encouraged by books to ask questions. Understandably, book banning is as old as meaningful writing. The earliest records of banning of books appears to be in 259-210 B.C. at the time when the emperor of China, Shih Huang Ti, is purported to have buried around 460 Confucian Scholars mainly to control the content that could be authored about history during his time. Ti perceived that if all books were banned, people will start history with him. In the nineteenth century is when the government in the United States was interested in understanding what was contained in different books because of the increase in the number of readers and reading material (Urrieta, Luis, and Margarita, p4).

Books that have Been Banned in the Last 10 Years

There are many books that have been banned in the last years, but only a few will be mentioned in this particular paper:

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher was banned because it was discussing suicide.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie was banned because of discussing topics such as drugs, gambling, and it was cultural insensitive just to name a few reasons.

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini was banned because it promoted sexual violence and the book was not suitable to age group.

Why Harry Potter and the Sorcerer′s Stone should be banned

The book talks about wizards, wizardry, how Hogwarts is a hellscape and it also presents that unicorns are not innocent. The book should be banned because it promotes some religious groups that believe the fantasy series about young wizards and it also promoted paganism, a step that affected Christian values adversely (Soulliere, p6). The case presented by the book is just crazy and it should be banned in order to protect younger children. The Banning of Harry Potter is similar to a number of contemporary books but as some point there seems to be a difference. Among the reasons that show similarities is that its banning is as result of promoting other religions and undermining the Christian values. The main difference lies on the fact that banning is aimed at protecting young children.

Conclusion

A book can inspire an individual to think in other ways. When a book makes people to have serious discussion, it is evidence that the writer has done a great work. It is essential for people to conduct discussions concerning books in order to understand the content in a given book. As clearly explained in this paper, there are very many books that have been banned based on their content and since the society claims that Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone contain information that is not fit for the society then there is need for the banning of it.
