What is a metered dose inhaler?

It is a small devfice which is very portable in nature and is handheled , it is used used for respiratory diseases wherein it is filled with medication and inhaled by the pateint at vthe prescribed amount. The MDi is most commonly used by pateints with respiratory diseases such as Asthma, Chronic Obstruictive Diseases such as Bronhchritis. The divice delivers a precribed amount of medication directly into the mouth of the uer andf then it is distributed to the lungs. The user places his or her mouth aroubnd the mothpices which is connected to a cannister whichb is a pressurized container where the medication is stored. The Acnister delivers the medication i9n thee form of puffs when thye user applies pressure underneath . the puffs when inhled goes into the lus and help diate them to enable better breathing

  • Mouth piece

PREPARING THE MDI

Using the MDI is not complicated but there are some necessary steps that must be taken or things to be done before using or administering medication using this device and they include

  • Gather all the equipment’s needed

  • Check to make sure the prescription is correct

  • Identify the patient using to identifiers such as name and date of birth

  • Check for n ay allergies

  • Introduce yourself to the patient

  • The first thing to do is performing hand hygiene

  • Inform the patient on medication uses and side effects

  • Take patients consent before administering medication

  • Ask patient to cough or clear throat of any mucus or foreign objects

  • Ask patient to seat up preferably in a 90 degree or 45 degrees angle to enable chest expansion

  • Dispense appropriate amount of medication as ordered

  1. Remove the cap of the inhaler

  2. Shake the inhaler to mix the medication properly

  3. Use techniques as shown or as directed by the provider

  4. Open mouth and make a firm seal around the mouth piece

  5. Using the spacer, place the MDI into the space

  6. Open mouth and make a firm seal around mouth piece

  7. Make sure the mouth piece is approximately 1.5 to 2 inches away from the mouth

  8. To perform a good treatment, you must use a closed lip technique where in mouth is closed and lips make a tight seal

  9. Make sure head is tilted backwards

  10. Perform a breath out

  11. Apply pressure and as you do you take deep slow breaths and repeat this for about 5 seconds

  12. Make sure to hold breath for at least 10 seconds to enable medication absorption

CARING FOR THE MDI

It is very important to keep the MDI clean to prevent the spread of bacteria which could be potentially fatal to the patient if inhaled

  1. Remove mouthpiece from canister

  2. Put in a clean bowl containing Luke warm water (the mouth piece and cap only)

  3. Spread on a clean cloth or paper towel

  4. Allow to air dry

  5. After drying assemble arts back into place and store in storage container


it is very important to always shake the inhaler before using and always remember that you do not store MDI near a hot surface or sunlight, keep in cool temperatures.

Before use , it is important to check the mouth piece to make sure there is not the presence of any foreign material that can cause illness
