n industrious young man named Bassanio develops a scheme to restore the wealth of his friend Antonio, an impoverished merchant. Bassanio needs Antonio's money in order to woo and marry Portia, a wealthy young heiress. Antonio borrows the money from a Jewish money-lender named Shylock. If Antonio doesn't return the money in three months, Shylock may take a pound of flesh from any part of Antonio's body. Complications arise, and Antonio's life is threatened when he is unable to pay Shylock.
