Richtel, Matt. "Youths Dial Up a New High." New York Times. 14 Mar. 2017 eLibrary.

This newspaper article argues that technology like video games, cell phones and television are the cause of teenagers using drugs less, because they are entertained by this technology. Research ties the two phenomena because the percentage of drug use in teenagers began to drop right around the time the use of computers and smartphones began to rise. While this connection has not yet been confirmed they certainly see the coincidence. Others argue and are hopeful that the reason for the drug use decline is due to public-education and prevention campaigns. At the same time this technology is a growing source of concern for parents and teachers. They state that it could also be almost like a drug because it causes the same impulses in teenagers as any other addictive drug would.

This source’s goal is to inform people about research done as to why drug use among teenagers has gone down and if it’s a good thing or bad. It is useful because it relies on research done for a decade. The article could potentially help my essay to argue pros and cons of technology use among the youth and how it affects their day to day life. It could help me structure my essay by using this as an example of what happens with teenagers and other youth while using technology.

Raposa, Megan. "Parents Take Learning into their Own Hands." Argus Leader, 27 Nov, 2016, pp. A.5, SIRS Issues Researcher.

This article from a newspaper in South Dakota, affiliated with USA Today, talks more about home schooling and how there is a big debate about it being a good thing or bad. The number of parents choosing to Home school has doubled since 2009. According to this source parents prefer home schooling because they don’t agree with public or private school’s curriculum and want more family time with their children and also parents want religion incorporated in their children’s education. However the debate occurs when people start to bring out stereotypes about home schooled children and how they lack socialization skills or that they are weird. They are afraid that children will not fit in society because they are home schooled. Quotes are provided in the article by parents who speak out for their children and children themselves stating that they are capable of socializing and being part of society as any other public school taught child.

This source is not relevant to my topic because the focus is more towards the battles and social stigma parents face by choosing to home school, but it is useful. It will help me use this as an example that our youth will not suffer from lack of face to face interactions and become anti-social because they remain indoors.

Caiola, Sammy. "Can Video Games Help Kids Get Active?" Daily Gleaner, 11 Jan, 2017, pp. C.1, SIRS Issues Researcher.

The research done for this publication has been about new developments in technology. Video games like the ones for “Wii Fit” or Xbox Kinect” among others are said to be helping the sedentary generation burn some calories while being indoors. Researchers call it exergaming, or technology-driven physical activity. They have been doing extensive research for over a decade on how effective these new developments are for the generation growing up with technology. Exergaming has even been added to the Boys & Girls Club for physical activities. According to this source, parents are raving about it and kids don’t look at it as a must do instead they look at it as just fun. Federal and local officials have embraced the fact that children are so drawn to video games and technology that they have created exergaming because childhood obesity remains a challenge in the US.

This source’s goal is to teach people about technology not being such a bad thing after all. They want to change the bad stigma and the perspective people have of technology. I am pro-technology use among youth and children, so this source will be useful to help me argue my perspective and show that there is an upside to technology use from a young age.
