Grading

Introduction

Grading is a common problem in schools, as many people argue that exam inatio ns are not a true reflection of knowledge. Many educators have been found arguing that students suffer from “examination fever,” and this potentially undermines their performance in any exam (Bonefeld & Dickhäuser, 2018). There have been various questions on the most used criteria of grading students and the parameters guiding the grades. Moreover, questions on who actually should be accountable for the student’s failure remain answere d. Grading has raised significant concerns, and solutions to the issue have not been addressed due to disagreements among the educational stakeholders (Bonefeld & Dickhäuser, 2018). The significant challenges surrounding grading include teaching strategy, curriculum development flexibility, knowledge transfer, and continuous assessments. Grading is a problem that affects the whole education system from the lower levels to higher levels (Jiraro, 2017). To understand the issue of grading, research involving teachers and students from all the levels of education will be conducted. The study will include 36 subjects from the lower, middle, and higher levels of education. Two teachers and ten students from every level of training will be sampled for this research. Interviews and responses to questionnaires will be utilized in conducting this research. The primary research questions here will be on the best techniques to employ in grading the performance of the students. The second research question will be on the challenges that teachers face in grading the students. The third research question will be on the reforms that should be implemented in the grading system. The responses from both the teachers and the students will be compiled and analyzed to confirm the answers to the research question.

Pre-service teachers graded 203 students whose performance appeared to hold an immigrant experience statistically considerably worse than that of a learner without a migration background. Pre-service teachers were found to contain relatively positive implicit attitudes on students with a migration background. The results clearly show that pre-service teachers manifest bias when grading students who have a migration background, especially in 3rd-grade level dictation works. 

The major strength of this article is that it employed real research through the utilization of experts in the educational field. The report also underpins the challenge of biasness when it comes to grading the performance of the students. Teachers have to change their attitude to grade all their learners effectively. The article could, however, be more applicable if its scope was diverse. The author could have used students in all levels of education to determine the impact of biasness. Using a specific group from a similar level makes the research inapplicable to all levels of education.

Jiraro (2017) utilizes interviews, case studies, and questionnaires to come up with the research finds. The authors also utilize research from previous authors on the same filed and further extend on it. Jiraro (2017) clearly shows that grading is a problem that significantly faces almost all the education systems. Jiraro (2017) proposes various grading guidelines that universities should adopt to promote effective learning. The weakness associated with the research of Jiraro (2017) is that it only focuses on the higher learning institutions. The author has not considered other middle and lower learning institutions. Therefore, this makes the scope of the research quite limited s it can only be adopted in higher learning institutions. Additionally, the utilization of research from other previous studies affects the credibility and reliability of the study by Jiraro (2017).

Mahmood & Jacobo (2019) conducted research on how teachers can better the grading system through the sliding scale rubric approach. The authors found out the sliding scale rubric approach has to be evaluated and refined to ensure that the learners are graded expertly. The application of sliding scale rubrics is crucial in motivating the learners to read rubric carefully and raise more questions on the critical rubric indicators. The study is, therefore, vital in helping educators comprehend the significance of applying sliding scale rubrics in grading . Sliding scale rubrics is one of the approaches that can be used in bettering the grading system in every institution. The article further pinpoints the common beliefs held by educators and how they affect the grading of learners. The major weakness of this study is that Mahmood & Jacobo (2019) used reviews from ot her authors and didn’t conduct any experiments to validate their arguments. The authors were supposed to carry research to determine whether the sliding scale rubrics approach is useful, and the real challenges that it presents.

Conclusion

The study has explored the issue of grading in education. Different states in America are coming up with their means of grading the performance of the students. The critical question here is whether the measures adopted by various states promote effectiveness in the assessment and curriculum development. All the states have to unite and come up with one grading system that is more effective and promising in meeting the educational goals, objectives, and targets .
