Cultural Geography Spring 2020 20 points Activity 4 : Bordering Your Vernacular Region Introduction Chapter 4 of your textbook delves into how places are defined by location, locale, and sense of place, as well as how they are culturally bordered and ordered. A vernacular region is a type of place that exists on a large scale, covering a wide area, that is defined by a shared sense of place rather than formal or functional boundaries. While many people may share an idea of what areas are and are not included in a particular vernacular region, people rarely agree on exactly where the region’s border lies. A classic example of a vernacular region is the Northwoods of northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. “Among the trees, lakes, rivers, and streams there is a common belief declaring this a unique region in our majestic country, ” writes Roger S chulz, reflecting aspects of the region’s locale and shared sense of place . Schulz attempted to border the Northwoods based on the particular traces of how many hunting and fishing licenses were sold a nd where there were lakes with lodges and resorts on them (see his project here ). Others use particular highways or ecological biomes as traces that form locational border lines for the North Woods. Your vernacular region may be an area you inhabit and consider “home,” or somewhere else you like to spend time. It can be as small as a neighborhood in town or as large as the Northwoods (but not the Nort hwoods, since that is used as an example). You will draw the borders of your region on a web map, and enter brief descriptions of its location, locale, and sense of place you associate with it. Directions 1. In a web browser, go to https://bit.ly/2MK1A8q to open the Vernacular Regions web mapping application created for this assignment. You sh ould see something that looks like this (minus the red labels): 2. Use the zoom buttons on the left side of the page and your mouse to zoom in on the vernacular region you would like to place borders around. You may also use the blue widget button at the bo ttom of the map to view a different underlying basemap, and the green button to bring up a table of vernacular region borders that have already been added to the map (use these as examples for yours). 3. When you are ready to draw your border, click the oran ge Edit button at the bottom of the page. In the Edit window that appears, click the purple line labeled “New Feature”, then click on the map to start drawing. Continue clicking on the map to add segments to your line. When you want to end your line, doubl e-click where you want it to end. 4. Include at least three such traces. 5. Close the pop -up to save your border. If you want to edit wh at you wrote, you can re - open the pop -up and edit any of the fields until you close or refresh the map. Just don’t leave any of the fields blank , or your work will not be saved ! Submitting Your Activity Go to the Activity 4 dropbox and type “done” in the text submission box.
