Cultural Geography Spring 2020 20 points Activity 7: The True Cost of Coal Introduction The True Cost of Coal is a project of the Beehive Design Collective , an activist collective of American and European artists . Through a complex visual landscape with animals standing in for human characters, the poster tells the story of mountaintop removal coal mining in Appalachia, including its dramatic impact on the local culture and its ties to the global capitalist economy. The poster contains few visual borders but many individual scenes or vignettes that tell a part of the story, which are all woven together into a continuous holistic landscape. The poster and accompanying narrative storybook are linked from the assignment directions page on D2L . Directions 1. Download the poster and narrative storybook from the Activi ty 7 directions on D2L . Open both on your computer’s desktop. Make sure the poster opens in a program that will allow you to zoom in on various parts of the artwork so you can get a sense of what’s going on in it. Windows Photo Viewer works well. 2. Explore the poster visually, using the narrative storybook as a guide. There are multiple ways you can do this. You can just look at the poster and try figuring out what it’s showing. You can read through the storybook in a linear fashion to get the whole story depicted in the poster. You can skim through the storybook to try and find individual scenes from the poster and read about their meaning. Or you can do some combination of these things. You will probably need at least an hour or two to get a good sense of understanding what’s going on. Note that there are some scenes in the poster than are not well represented in the storybook. Some of these are further explained in the Powerpoin t presentation that is also linked from the assignment directions page, but you are also free to make up your own idea of what each one represents simply based on the visual image.
