I am [name] doing [course/degree name] from the University of [name]. As a team member of the group [name] I'm here to take you through the journey of our project.

The main result of our project was a food traceability program based on blockchain.

A company like Global Food Industries (GFI) can tell its customers that its mission is to provide safe and quality food items.

The company, however, works with a large number of suppliers from all over the Middle East, Asia, and North Africa.

With such a vast network of parties involved in the supply chain, it can become challenging for the company to monitor and validate everyone following their requirements and standards.

But Global Food Industries cannot risk exposing its clients to damaged or expired foods that don’t meet their quality and safety standards.

So, what can it do?

This is where our project’s solution comes in.

By creating a traceability app, GFI can ensure that it only deals with suppliers that meet their requirements. By designing, developing, and implementing the blockchain:

  1. The suppliers and producers demonstrate that they meet the expected standards in growing crops and livestock that they will supply to GFI. After they are validated and certified, a smart contract with the company is initiated. A copy of the farmer transaction is stored in a block. This is copied to other blocks through a peer-to-peer network in the chain.

  2. The processor produces document information that proves the facility is inspected by the government and approved for meeting food safety standards. The processors also upload data about additives and processing conditions. This block of information inherits the previous block and also copies it to the next block.

  3. The distributor also provides evidence that captures storage and shipping conditions.

  4. The retailer submits inventory metrics.

  5. The customer scans the product's QR code, which reveals to him or her the entire information of the product from the suppliers to the sold item.

As an active member of the team, I contributed towards the project planning, analyzing systems requirements, and researching various software architecture.

Blockchain as a Service (Baas) architecture provided an ideal way in which we could create and implement our app. The main interaction layers are:

Application layer: Where users interact with the app.

Administration layer: Where consensus algorithms are run to include the variables defined for the specific app.

Blockchain layer: Where ledgers containing transactions are run.

Transaction layer: Where smart contracts are generated, and transactions validated.

Network layer: Network nodes for information sharing across the blockchain, which in our case is peer-to-peer, virtual database, and cloud storage.
