Beginning to Look at and Talk About Art

Some of you in class have stated that you have had experience with art, and some of you said you have not. Whether or not you have taken an art class, taken a photograph on your phone, or have been to an art museum, we can all agree that art can be pretty great. However, what is the value of it? Why do we study it? Here are a few sources that begin to answer these questions.

Watch/read the following resources on looking at and valuing art:

After reading/watching the above resources, consider and write down your answers to the following questions:

  1. Why do you think we, as a culture should look at art?

  2. Why do you think art is important?

  3. What role, if any, does art play in your daily life? Explain your answer.

  4. What do you think the cultural and monetary value of art should be based on?

  5. Summarize the video about why museums are important. What did some of the museum officials say? Do you agree with them? Why or why not?
