Running head; THE ORIGIN OF SLAVERY IN AMERICA

Leonardo Da Vinic

By the end of the 15th century, drawing (previously seen as solely a student medium) had evolved into an artistic form in its own right. By this time, people saw drawing as embodying, perhaps even more clearly than the finished work, the artist's personality and creative genius. During the Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci was considered the artist of his time. Everyone knew him, everyone loved him. It was believed that, with his success, skill and knowledge, every artist should emulate (copy) him if they wanted to be successful. Most of what we know about Leonardo as a person, and as an artist, comes from the hundreds of sketchbooks of his that survive today.

In the "Drawing Mediums" module below, "Da Vinic Sketches." Examine each sketch and take note of the following questions:

Questions

  1. What do you see in EACH sketch? Be specific (and brief).

  2. Which sketches do you think he drew from observation? How can you tell?

  3. What academic disciplines do you see Leonardo engaging with? In which images do you see these disciplines? Be specific!

  4. What do you think these tells us about Da Vinci’s interests?

  5. Again, Da Vinci was the artist of his time. Everyone knew him. Everyone loved him. Based on the sketches, and your above answers, what do you think people in the Renaissance valued in an artist? What do you think that they think made a good artist?
