Modern to Contemporary Painting Practices

In continuing with our discussion on painting, we are now moving on to Modern and Contemporary painting. In this module you will be looking at art from the mid-nineteenth century to the mid twentieth century. Up until this point, you have been looking at really traditional paintings and techniques, such as the realistic art of the Renaissance and even in the Romantic era—though this period was driven by imagination, it still held close ties to reality. Though we will still see realistic art in this 200 year span, what we will start seeing in this period is abstract art. What is important to note is the difference between abstract art and abstracted art.

Abstract art is art that has not visual connections to reality. Instead, artists focus on the basic elements like line, color, and shape.

Improvisation 28, Wassily Kandinsky, 1912

Abstracted art is where an artist takes a form or object from reality, and distorts it to an almost unrecognizable point. So its abstract but still holds visual ties to reality.

Woman I, Willem de Kooning, 1952

We will see both forms of art as we move forward through this module.

Read the following articles on the different artistic movement from the mid 1800s to the mid 1900s:

  • https://courses.lumenlearning.com/boundless-arthistory/chapter/impressionism/ (read from the top and stop when you get to “Impressionist Sculpture”)

While you read, take note on the following:

  2. What was the typical subject matter for Impressionist paintings?

  3. How did they paint those scenes? What was their painting technique?

  4. How did the Impressionist style go against The Académie?

  5. Find two movement OTHER THAN CUBISM that you found intriguing. Write down at least two characteristics of the art from the two movements you picked and a list of key words, adjectives, nouns, etc, that you would use to describe them.

Then watch the following videos on Abstract Expressionism and Color Field Painting:

While watching the videos, take note on the following:

  1. What is Abstract Expressionism characterized by?

  2. According to the video, why could only Jackson Pollock have created his paintings?

  3. How did Pollock create his paintings?

  4. What are deductive shapes?

  5. How did Frank Stella break from artistic and painting traditions?

  6. How did Helen Frankenthaler break from artistic and painting traditions?

  7. What was the goal of artists as discussed in the video? Why were their goals so revolutionary?
