we need to build a story for this assignment for the purpose of reference. I have attached the backstory and our part of the work is chapter 2 which you can find in the flow chart. The flow chart has

Backstory:

John Ryan Williams was an optimistic, happy-go-lucky man who was ready to take on the world. Up until recently, everything had been going very well for John. He just graduated from a master’s level Bioinformatics program with top honors and had landed a job with Height Network, a biotechnology laboratory that services much of lower Michigan. His job, which largely involved working with and analyzing genomics and molecular data, was surprisingly stress-free. He loved sifting through data and decoding what it all meant, so work never really felt like work. Although John lived alone, he had even signed a new lease for a large and newly updated 3-bedroom house which included a large fenced in backyard with a newly built shed and cast-iron fire pit. Exercising four to five time per week, John was in peak health condition and typically preferred to workout early in the morning before work. All in all, John added up to one impressive human being.

However, despite having such stability in many areas of his life, John was not void of his own issues. John was quite insecure and diffident. This made it hard at times for John to speak his mind, and he wished greatly for the ability to be more abrasive. For instance, John still regrets not standing up to a former classmate who became quite condescending towards the end of their studies. John had also gone longer than he’d liked without a job after graduating from school. It wasn’t for a lack of effort in job hunting, but rather being too selective with finding “the perfect fit.” This gap in employment only added to John’s widespread insecurities.

In an attempt to fill some sort of void in his life, John began looking to get a puppy. The backyard was of sufficient size to raise a dog, and, after long negotiation, John had convinced his landlord to allow an animal for a monthly fee. John had been conversing back and forth with his best friend, Samuel, about what type of dog to get, what would need to be bought in preparation for the puppy, and when they would go together to pick it up, since John was not comfortable driving alone with a newborn pooch running loose in the vehicle. Despite agreeing on a time to visit Canine Companions, the local animal shelter, Samuel had not replied to John’s texts in several days.

Samuel,

Are we still on to head to CC for tomorrow? If not that’s fine, I just need to know so I can make the proper accommodations.

-John

Get the puppy alone:

John scrolled through his texts wondering why Samuel wasn’t replying. Samuel did have a track record of failing to reply within a timely manner, so this was not far out of character for him. John looked through the window overlooking his backyard and pictured a small, four-legged critter running around joyously.

Impatient, John thought “I’m just going to get him myself; it can’t be that bad driving alone.”

Still needing the essentials to care for a puppy companion, John made his way towards the local PetSmart. As he exited his vehicle, John picked up on the smell of dog food and kibble wafting throughout the air. He walked into the store excitedly, grabbed a medium sized shopping cart, and walked up and down each isle so that he would not miss anything. Food, check. Collar, check. Leash, check. Dog bed, check. After some time, John had completed his mental checklist of necessities for taking on such a responsibility. Possibly the most important of these items was a car-friendly kennel which would ultimately make this solo endeavor possible. John proceeded to pay for his items and was greeted by a beautiful brown-haired woman, who appeared about his age and clearly possessed a strong love for animals.

“It looks like someone is getting a new dog,” the woman said with excitement.

John giggled awkwardly and replied “Sure am. Heading over to Canine Companions right now to pick one out.”

“That is awesome! Do you have one picked out yet?” the cashier asked.

“No, not yet. I’m hoping it will be the other way around,” John said through a large smile.

The two continued to playfully converse until all the items had been rung up and John paid the total. As he left, John read the cashiers nametag – Rachel – and addressed her by name as he said goodbye. John was very proud of himself for using her name in conversation, as this was quite out of his comfort zone.

John drove out of the PetSmart parking lot and headed down the highway towards the pet shelter. Windows down, the bags containing puppy essentials waved violently in the back seat. The sound of the radio became inaudible over the wind blowing through the vehicle. John turned off the radio completely – he wasn’t listening anyway. John could only think of what could be waiting for him at his destination.

Impatient, John thought “I’m going to give him one last shot to answer his phone, and if not, I’m going alone.”

John clicked and the dial button next to Samuel’s contact icon.

Ring.. ring.. ring.. “Hello?” sounded Samuel’s voice through the earpiece on the phone.

“Hey, are you still coming with me to get the puppy today?” said John with an intentional mildly annoyed tone.

Samuel replied, “Oh shoot! I forgot all about that. That’s today? Yeah, I’m free, but do you want to pick me up?”

After letting out an audible sigh, John said “Sure, I’m leaving now to get you. We still have to go to PetSmart first to get everything.”

The two said their goodbyes and hung up the phone. John’s frustration only lasted the half mile drive to Samuel’s apartment. Once Samuel entered the vehicle, the two instantly began joking around and all tension dissipated.

Walking to the car, Samuel nudged John with his elbow. “She was cute,” Samuel said with a large grin.

John sheepishly smiled in agreeance and looked down at the blacktop to divert the conversation.
