1.0 Introduction and Background of the Study

The effects of social media in education and the modern-day society cannot be underestimated. The emergence of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Snapchat, among others has allowed thousands of people to exchange images and photos daily from one geographical location to another (Abbas, et al, 2019). Moreover, such platforms have made it easy to communicate with individuals regardless of the geographical location in which one is located. Saleh (2015) confirms that social media, in general, has an inevitable and inescapable effect on every person irrespective of age and that is why many people spend a lot of time on it. This inescapable pressure which was once started by the traditional media is now being made a reality by the platforms of social media. Many people who are constantly exposed to the platforms of social media are finding themselves conforming to the standards of the things they watch. Hence, it is a clear confirmation that social media is not neutral but has unimaginable effects, which are either positive or negative, on modern society.

There is no doubt that the use of social media as a means of communication has reached both the preparatory institution of learning and the universities. According to Amedie (2015), the use of social media has become part and parcel of the young generation to the extent that they cannot do many things unless they lean on it. It is through social media that a good number of young people are getting information about the emerging trends in education as well as the prevailing circumstances along with the world (Let, et al, 2018). Many schools have currently formed social media portals where they can easily communicate with students as well as their parents regarding their academic endeavors (Lee, et al, 2018). Hence, social media has made it easy to reach students during periods of vacation regardless of the geographical locations in which they are found. Moreover, there are a good number of schools and colleges which have formal pages and groups on social media portals such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp, among others, where the information about the educational progress of the students is posted for easy acquisition. So, the students do not need to meet the teachers and facilitators to get the required learning materials. Apart from social networks being used for sending the learning materials to the students, the management of various schools and colleges have developed these sites to create a platform where students, teachers, and staff members can get the opportunity of interacting positively hence enhancing the academic progress and overall well-being of the students.

1.2 First Research Question

What are the general effects of social media in education?

1.3 Second Research Question

What is the relationship between social media, communication, psychological health of a student, and performance of a student in education?

1.4 Objectives
  1. To investigate the general effects of social media in education.

  2. To investigate the relationship between communication in social media and academic performance.

  3. To investigate the relationship between the use of social media and the psychological health of a student.

  4. To investigate the psychological and physiological effects of the contents of social media such as unrealistic images.

2.0 Literature Review 2.1 Social Media

Abbas et al (2019) reveal amazingly that almost all Americans spend much time on social media than any other platform of communication and media. This conforms to the findings which shows that social media has claimed millions of people who are constantly surfing in it (Mowafy, 2018). Social media platforms are online sites through which people can interact and exchange ideas regardless of their location in the world. This is in line with the mainstream definition which states that which reveals that social media platforms are online sites that allow users to manage profiles where they can exchange information and pictures from one point to another (Acheaw and Larsen, 2015). Even though this definition limits social media to be web-based service platforms, people regard it as part and parcel of their social lives because it has infiltrated almost all the echelons of life. Mowafy (2018) further confirms that more than half of the population of the US is subscribers of social media and the majority of them are teenagers. The reason why social media has become part and parcel of the lives of many people is that it is the dominant channel that facilitates communication with friends and family members. Those who subscribe to social media platforms using computers are more than 200 million while those who access those using mobile devices are approximately 50 million (Amedie, 2015). Even though there are many platforms of social media, Facebook stands as the one that claims many people especially teenagers (Sanaa and Faizi, 2018). Sanaa and Faizi (2018) further confirm that among the subscribers of Facebook and other emerging social media platforms such as Twitter and Pinterest are young people who constantly looking for information related to academia.

2.2 Effects of Social Media in Education

Francis and Peter (2015) still make it clear that Facebook is the largest and dominant social media that claims many audiences from around the world. It is easily accessed by many people using different devices such as Personal Computers and mobile tools. Similarly, these 1.4 billion users were surfing the platform at a rate of 700 billion minutes per month (Francis and Peter, 2015). Facebook is designed in such a manner that it can enhance individual and group communication regardless of the geographical location in which the parties communicating are found (Lee, et al, 2018). Hence, students using Facebook can do group activities and submit the work to the school without physically meeting.

According to Saleh (2015), Facebook hosts several unrealistic body images that at some point are integrated with advertisements and strategically located at the position of Facebook pages which can be easily liked with the browsers. Such images which are promoted in Facebook using photo 9 album platform do not bypass students because of their inquisitive nature and readiness to copy what is done with other celebrities. This draws away their attention from issues of academia to the point of copying the celebrities or the trends they view. Again, Facebook has an ease of access and connectivity has opened a way for many users hence creating a platform of creating many unrealistic body images (Saleh, 2015).

Facebook also has another attribute that allows students to easily upload and download unrealistic images because of the several options offered by the platform of either liking or disliking the image. Many students using Facebook always like the images that appeal to their taste despite the psychological and health consequences that are associated with such images. Sinprakob et al (2015) say that students who are frequently surfing through Facebook and other social media platforms have exhibited depreciated confidence and self-esteem. An empirical study revealed that students who like unrealistic images on Facebook have an attitude of becoming thin, disordered eating habits, desire to acquire new fashions and clothes and above all, body dissatisfaction (Saleh, 2015) hence becoming psychologically disturbed in issues about education. Therefore, it is very clear from these findings that the more one likes the unrealistic images on the social media platforms, the more he/she impaired with body dissatisfaction and eating disorders especially when there is the likelihood that the image is promoting thin bodies.

2.3 Social Media and Progress in Education

For the last five years, immense growth has been witnessed in the link between social media and the institutions of learning (Amedie, 2015). Social media has bridged the gap to the extent that most schools can now connect with students easily regardless of the distance. The link between social media and education is bridged by the interaction of the students and teachers. Most students of a particular school would like to be identified as a family and community on social media platforms (Amedie, 2015) hence improving their self-esteem to a greater deal. While this is done at the interest of the students, it is promoting the respective image of the schools hence increment in the number of students.

Abbas et al (2019) say that the emergence of social media has changed how schools communicate with students in particular and parents in general. Besides, websites and social networks have become the official portals where most students get materials associated with education. Lee et al (2018) say that most schools have employed social media technology because it is a convenient technology of sharing information and creating concrete relationships with the students. Amedie (2015) affirms that platforms such as Twitter give business organizations an opportunity of communicating directly with students hence reviewing their academic progress periodically.

3.0 Methodology 3.1 Research Design

This researcher will choose a case study as the research design. This is because the design is quite instrumental in analyzing contemporary and emerging events (Krehl and Weck, 2019). Effects of social media in education being an emerging phenomenon, case study design will ensure that the topic of study is qualitatively and accurately analyzed within its context. To make the findings more concrete, authentic, and accurate, a mixed case study approach will be chosen. This is to bring forth the analytic principles in the process of study.

3.2 Participants

The participants of the study will be college students using social media in education. The sample chosen for this study will be 150 participants which will consist of students and which will be chosen through random sampling.

3.3 Techniques

The research will use both primary data which were majorly obtained from survey and secondary data which will be obtained from the internet and archives. After collecting data, the principle of triangulation will be used to harmonize the data obtained from different sources and sites. Again, being that the research is to use both primary and secondary data, there is a need to make them coherent and that could only be used by the principle of triangulation. The method of triangulation will involve reasoning based on many sources of data. Another reason why the collected data will be subjected to triangulation is that the research adopts the multi-case study approach. Krehl and Weck (2019) confirm that the method of triangulation is quite accurate and yield more convincing findings. Therefore, it is a fact that the findings of this study will be more accurate and satisfactory as far as the topic of study is concerned.

This research will use content and qualitative analysis to determine the effects of social media in education. Primary data will be obtained through a survey with some students using social media in enhancing education. Secondary data comprises data that has been gathered from the published and is used by the person who did not collect them. This type of data is very essential in any kind of research undertakings because it is one way through which research questions can be answered without necessarily undertaking an empirical study. It must also be understood that secondary data assumes both qualitative and quantitative nature. For this research, multiple sources of secondary data will be used to authenticate the phenomenon being investigated.

The tools for data analysis will be abductive reasoning which involves the matching of the data, explanation, statistical prediction, and cross-checking. Both primary and secondary data will be subjected to systematic matching where the analysis will be done to seek to illustrate the relationship between the gathered data and the hypothesis of the study. Statistical tools such as regression analysis and Pearson Correlation will also be used to determine the relationship that exists between the use of social media and the academic performance of students.

3.4 Ethical Considerations

Ethical considerations involve professional standards, norms and conduct exhibited in the process of conducting research (Chung, 24). The first one will revolve around the collection of the primary data. The researcher will recognize the confidentiality of the participants hence will not coerce them to strictly give responses as per the pre-defined questions. This is what made the researcher to major on the open-ended questions because it will give the participants an opportunity of giving their views and expressing their interest. The researcher also will deal with the each and every participant at a personal level to create confidence that their responses will not be leaked to the third party.

Conclusion

All in all, the research proved that the emergence of social media has affected education to a greater deal. Most of the promotions in the education field which were once done in the traditional media are now done on social media because of its convenience and low cost. Again, the perception of most students who are targeted has recently changed to the extent that they cannot concentrate on the lengthy and boring advertisements on traditional media platforms such as a newspaper. Social Media is creating a platform where students can learn and conduct group discussions easily regardless of their location.
