Question 1 (3 points)

Please respond to 1 of the prompts (A refers to Rupp Chapter 4; B to Rupp Chapter 5).

A. In Chapter 4, Rupp tells us about two legal cases: Long Beach (1914) and Newport, Rhode Island (1919-20). Presume that I already know the facts of the cases, and explain the significance of one of them. That is, you don't need to tell me what happened; instead identify which case you're writing about and write a paragraph or two summarizing how Rupp's discussion helps us understand how cultural understandings and legal definitions of specific sex acts, gender, and/or sexuality were evolving during this period.

B. Choose one significant location, primary source (e.g., historical document or painting), or historical character covered by Rupp in Chapter 5 and explain how it helps us understand sexual expressions or identities during the 1920s and/or 30s. If specific geographic location, race, class, etc. are significant, please discuss briefly.

Clement and Velocci provide an overview of sweeping changes during the 50 years they cover. Please identify with page number(s) and a phrase or sentence and then discuss in a paragraph or two a significant topic/theme OR a one or two specific incidents/people they mention.
