ASSIGNMENT 1: PRESS RELEASE (20%)

Individual Assignment (SLO1 and SLO2)

DEADLINE: Week 7 (4th October 2020; 11:59pm)

SUBMISSION MODE: Email (Your tutor will share the email with you)

Most organizations, institutions and businesses produce press releases on a regular basis (for eg. https://www.shell.com.my/media/2020-press-releases.html). One of the major tasks of media writers is to write and publish noteworthy press releases. For this assignment, imagine that you are a media writer for ONE (1) of the following organizations/ companies.

  • H&M Group

  • National Art Gallery Malaysia

  • Sunway Lagoon theme park

  • FoodPanda

  • Shopee Malaysia

TO DO TASK: Write 300 words (no +/- 10% allowed) press release on behalf of your chosen organization. Your press release should reflect something your organization is doing, which is noteworthy and interesting to the public/s. Example of noteworthy events may include things such as holding special events, announcing fundraising campaigns, or describing new programs. Note: The nature of event description may change, so consult your tutor or lecturer for clarification before writing your press release.

Upon the completion of this assignment, you will be able:

  • To plan and conduct interview(s) to gather information from specific individuals.

  • To apply media writing skills in the construction and planning of a feature article.

RECOMMENDED PRESS RELEASE WRITING STYLE: Firstly, there should be an attention-getting headline. Secondly, the most important part of the story and critical details should be communicated first. After that, the most crucial news is presented in the first paragraph, followed by each succeeding paragraph aiming to fill in the rest of the story with details and background in descending order of importance. (Note that most press releases put information “about the organization” at the end of their press releases and some in the middle, so think about where you will put this vital information when writing the press release.)

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

  • You need to provide your details (name, student ID, subject code and title) on the front cover page.

  • Once emailing your tutor, do copy (in email terms “cc” the subject lead lecturer as well (AB: [email protected]).

  • Turnitin submission is required – but only the single page with the Percentage Similarity index (Class ID: 25522101; Enrolment Key: 1234).

Overall, be creative in what you do. If you have any questions regarding this, you can email your tutor for clarification or me (AB) [email protected].
