Art Tatum Possibly the greatest of all was Art Tatum. His technique was so strong that many people thought the recordings were two different people and would not believe otherwise until they saw it with their own eyes. Speaking of eyes, Art Tatum was completely blind in one eye and nearly so in the other. He learned to play by listening to and copying player piano rolls. Originally from Ohio, he went to New York in 1931 and soon became a phenom at the clubs on 52 nd Street. A famous cutting co ntest followed in which the local piano mafia of James P. Johnson, Fats Waller and Willie “The Lion” challenged Tatum at a Harlem club. Tatum cut them to ribbons!! Fats Waller was playing at the Yacht club sometime later when Tatum stopped in. Waller annou nced to the crowd, “I am just play the piano, but God Is in the house tonight.” Ironically, Art Tatum was so good that he may have brought an end to stride piano’s influence on jazz piano. Nobody could even match his style let alone improve on it! Future p ianists were forced to find other styles and techniques to develop.
