SUBJECT: Patient Portal.
Background
The 21st century is characterized by the use of technology in every aspect of human lives. The same extends to the healthcare industry, where platforms like telemedicine, electronic health records (EHR), and phone applications positively impact it. One component of the EHR has been shown to improve patient care by enhancing the patient’s engagement, which is the patient portal. This technology serves many functions and is used in various settings, such as hospitals and clinics. This versatility of the portal is achieved by the multiple features that can be incorporated into it. These include allowing refill prescriptions, request referrals, making appointments, asking questions, and accessing results, medical history, visit summaries, and patient education articles. However, health facilities mainly incorporate significant features and leave out the rest, as it saves the costs and simplifies the portal. In determining the notable features, research is warranted and is conducted to hospital personnel and patients.
Topic
There has been an increase in the implementation of a patient portal in healthcare over the years. As of 2016, approximately 92% of health facilities in the USA had adopted this technology. The reason for this dramatic increase in the portals is due to their improvement in inpatient care.
Nonetheless, for a useful portal, all features and components should be available to cater to the hospital's needs and patients (AAO, 2016).
Purpose of report
This report highlights research that will be carried out to identify better the needs of both the hospital and the patients, and subsequently, help determine features to incorporate into the portal.
Intended Audience
The audience of the report is the health facilities and their multidisciplinary professionals. The professionals include physicians, nurses, clericals, and management. The facilities and the professional will benefit from this report as it will mention ways of obtaining crucial information important in implementing the portal.
Scope of Report
The scope of the report involves conducting primary and secondary research. The primary research entails surveying the multidisciplinary professionals and the patients through interviews. In contrast, secondary research consists of obtaining information from journals and credible websites.
Experience with Topic
The topic involves researching the implementation of a patient portal. I learned diverse designs in performing research from the course work. Besides, this work also made me conversant with the EMR and the patient portal to a lesser extent. Much of the information concerning the patient portal, I have obtained it from web searches.
Potential Problems
This research’s main barrier is patients lacking eHealth literacy, which is brought forward by the portals' novelty. Therefore, it will be problematic to obtain meaningful information from the patients, notably from the old and rural lot (ST Joseph Health, 2019).
Research strategy
The primary research will be achieved through semi-structured interviews done individually. The meetings will be audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim to enhance their reliability. Before initiating the conversations, the patients will be briefed about the portal due to their lack of literacy.
The secondary sources used in the research will need to be credible and published in the last five years.

Conclusion
A patient portal is vital in healthcare because it improves the delivery of patient care. However, the portals possess several distinct features, and their significance is dependent on the healthcare facility. Therefore, it is vital to incorporate the appropriate functions in an organization’s portal,
which is realized through research. This report is of assistance to the health facilities as it shows how analysis can be carried out, which is through conducting interviews and web searches.
