Dizzy 8-7 Bebop To many fans, critics and historians, bebop almost seems to come out of nowhere. A big reason for this was: A recording ban was in effect during the period in which bebop was developing . Unless you were a regular in the New York clubs like Minton’s, you would not have heard bebop grow up. By the time the ban is lifted, and recording begins again, jazz has dramatically changed. When the general public finally started to hear bebop it had a lready gone through its growth and evolution phase. Many jazz fans, critics and even musicians found this music a little too different from what they were used to. This was somewhat intentional . Bebop artists were reacting to the overt commercialism, and “watering down” of what swing had become. They purposefully wanted to create an art form that would not be co -opted by the mainstream commercial (white) public. They presented themselves as (and were) musical intellectuals. Dizzy’s style of dress, with the horn rimmed glasses, the goatee and beret is still popular today. Here is a good article on the development, history and attitude of bebop.
