The Modern Jazz Quartet The Modern Jazz Quartet Many of the participants in the “Birth of Cool” sessions went on to prominent careers in the cool jazz genre. Gerry Mulligan became a major figure in the west coast cool of the mid 1950s through mid 1960s. Miles Davis becomes one of the major figures in all of jazz history and influences several new genres. John Lewis, who played piano and arranged for the “Birth of Cool” sessions, spent the majority of his career with The Modern Jazz Qua rtet. The sound of the Modern Jazz Quartet is often described as “chamber jazz”. The group tried to present jazz in a sophisticated, elegant setting. The men would usually wear tuxedos and play very high class venues. Their music is very intricate and interweaving….lik e “classical” baroque counterpoint. The group’s career spanned from 1952 all the way into the 1990s. Their neo -classical approach allowed them to reach and appeal to a different audience than some of the harder edged nightclub acts that featured all out b lowing.
