Stan Getz The actual girl from Ipanema Stan Getz and Bossa Nova Another hugely popular offshoot of the cool jazz phenomenon is “Bossa Nova”. Some American jazz musicians, most notably Stan Getz, became very attracted to the tones and harmonies of this style of Brazilian beach music. The main purveyors of the style in Brazil were Jo ão Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Jobim went on to pen many of Bossa Nova’ s most enduring standards and is considered Bossa’s premier composer. Stan G etz is given credit for bringing this sound to the United States . (Charlie Byrd, a guitarist, also embraced and championed the sound). In 1964 Getz released an album entitled “Getz /Gilberto”. This album contained the huge, breakthrough Bossa Nova hit, “Th e Girl from Ipanema”. In 1965 it won Grammys for Best Album of the Year, Best Jazz Instrumental Album and Best Engineered Album -Non -classical. The track, “The Girl from Ipanema” also won Record of the Year….a very rare feat for a jazz album! Just about any list of essential jazz recordings will have this album on it. There actually was a girl from Ipanema. She was a teenage girl that would walk by the café that Antonio Carlos Jobim used to hang out at. Helô Pinheiro, the actual girl from Ipanema, enjoyed a lifetime of celebrity on the beaches of Brazil for the rest of her life. “The Girl from Ipanema” was sung by both João Gilberto, in Brazil’s native Portuguese, and his then wife, Astrud, in English. Legend has it that Astrud’s English was so bad, that she had to learn each line phonetically and did n’t understand much of what she was singing at all ! Her sweet, innocent, clear vibrato -less tone was endearing to most everyone who heard it. The song has gone on to become one of the most familiar, requested and recorded j azz standards in history. Listen to “The Girl from Ipanema”. Note Astrud’s voice, Getz’s great solo and complimentary tone and the general “coolness” of the entire performance.
