One of the best selling jazz albums of its time. Dave Brubeck and “West Coast Cool” The Miles Davis nonette that recorded the “Birth of Cool” sessions had a good number of white, west coast musicians. Among them were Gerry Mulligan (baritone sax), Lee Konitz (alto sax) and Stan Getz (tenor sax). Each of these artists made their mark on th e cool jazz scene taking place on the west coast. But, the most successful west coast group was The Dave Brubeck Quartet. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Dave Brubeck Quartet featured a sophisticated, somewhat classically influenced sound. Brubec k’s piano playing was light and precise. His equally important partner was Paul Desmond on alto saxophone. Desmond’s tone was rich and pure with very little vibrato….very much like a classical musician would approach it. When asked about how he came about his tone he responded, “ I think I had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to sound like a dry martini.” The Brubeck Quartet was doing quite well playing for the college and Bay Area audiences on the west coast. They recorded several college themed albums with titles like, “Jazz at college of the Pacific” (1953) and “Jazz Goes to College” (1954, the same year he was on the cover of Time Magazine). In 1959 the Brubeck Quartet released one of best selli ng jazz albums of all time . Columbia Records was not very enthusiastic about the album at first. The “Time Out” theme referred to the fact that most of the tunes in the collection were in unusual time signatures.

Regardless, the album sold over 1,000,000 c opies very quickly and the feature tune, “Take Five” reached #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #5 on Billboard’s “Easy Listening” chart. Listen to “Take Five”. Notice if you count out the beats, they are grouped in sets of five (you can also look at it as a “3+2” pattern. Also notice that the tune features an extended drum solo by Joe Morello. Brubeck keeps the five beat rhythm pattern going while Morello solos around it. Take Five :  5/4 time signature - Five beats in a measure.
