All information must be fully sourced using a modified APA format Tropical Cyclone Adai 4 Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies • Identify what could have been done to prevent or reduce the economic damage and number of injuries/casualties. Incorporate peer reviewed literature into your assignment as appropriate . If you create an original mitigation /adaptation strategy , it will be strengthened by including natural disasters which have been mitigated (or adapted to) using similar techniques . To organize this section, use the framework discussed during lecture (outlined below) Choose 2or 3 “Approaches to Mitigation & Adaptation” and elaborate on what specifically could have been done to reduce the number of injuries/casualties and economic damage. Mitigation and Adaptation Framework 1) Affect the cause : (mitigation) reducing the likelihood that the hazard will occur. i.e. wildfires are started by people, so educate them and enforce safety regulations. Store and conserve water in the wet seasons can reduce the impact of agricultural and hydrological drought, although it does not produce more rain. We cannot affect the cause of earthquakes or volcanoes. 2) Modify the hazard : (mitigation) constructing engineering solutions (breakwaters, walls, flood bypass channels). Move people, buildings, etc, away from the hazard. Build on higher ground, away from the river – however, people prefer engineering solutions (build flood defenses, not move elsewhere) 3) Modify the loss potential: mitigation + adaptation: if hazard can ’t be reduced, the community can take measures to reduce its sensitivity. Earthquake resistant buildings: number of earthquakes not changed (same exposure), but buildings can withstand shaking (reduced sensitivity). Adaption approach: education, practice and early warning. 4) Spread the loss : adaptation approach. Economic and property losses. People who lose homes may be helped by other members of the community or charities. 5) Planning for the loss : adaptation approach. Insurance is one example. Emergency kits, communities that budget for repairs and governments with conting ency funds for emergencies have planned for loss. 6) Bear the loss : suck it up.
