Children Vaccination

Vaccination is vital in the prevention of diseases among children, it important for healthcare workers as well as pharmacists to be aware of the importance of children's vaccination and why some of the parents are hesitant to bring their children for vaccination. Though currently, we do not have the federal laws in place concerning vaccine administration, every state has got its laws on detecting the vaccines which are required for the children at the time they are entering school or at a given age (State Vaccination Requirement,2016). From the 50 states, they allow medical exemptions for particular patients including the ones that are immune-compromised or allergic to the various types of vaccine components. Besides, we have 30 states which allow an exemption for the children whose parents cite religious reasons and 18 states which make special accommodations for the people providing philosophical reasons. For states with lenient laws on the vaccination requirements, they have got increased rates of exemptions granted, this could result in great vulnerability in the population in terms of contracting diseases that can be prevented. In this argumentive essay, I am going to look at reasons why parents hesitate to go for vaccination of their children and the benefit of taking the vaccines.

There are different categories for why parents refuse to take their children for vaccination, personal beliefs, safety concerns, religious reasons, and desire to get more information from healthcare providers (Nowak et al.,2016).

Religious Reasons

The most common reasons why parents do not vaccinate their children stems from a religious perspective and the beliefs that the people hold. Religious reasons are distinct from the other cited reasons where they are linked to the core beliefs of parents, at times it’s difficult to dissuade individuals from views against immunization. The choices arise due to the staunch convictions from the beliefs that people hold. For individuals who are usually driven by religious assertions usually remain adamant about going for a vaccine (Nickels et al.,2014).

Personal Beliefs

Though it could be seeming contrary to the intuition, we have got individuals that see it beneficial to have children contract various preventable diseases (Fredrickson et al.,2004). Some of the parents usually believe natural immunity is better for children than immunity which is acquired through vaccines. For others they express the belief that if the children contract the preventable disease, it is of benefit in long term for well being of the child, this will assist in making the immune of the child stronger as the child becomes an adult (Fredrickson et al.,2004). We have got parents who believe that the diseases which are being vaccinated against are not that prevalent hence children are at minimal risk of contracting the diseases. Due to this, they believe the possible negative effects of administering vaccines outweigh the benefits of the vaccines (Saada et al.,2015).

Safety Concerns

This is the area of greatest concern where we have got autism and disability being among the drivers. This belief is usually generated by the safety of the vaccines, I can provide an example of a polio vaccine from my locality which caused several children to get disability of one leg where it became shorter compared to the other. Due to this most people are cautious about taking children for a polio vaccine since they think of the same scenario reappearing for their children. This example and information from the other reports cause parents to be reluctant to take their children for vaccination. They usually raise doubts about both short-term and negative long-lasting effects hence this concern could make parents refuse vaccines completely.

The desire for More Education

Another reason is that the parents have to be more informed about the vaccines, they want to know more about healthcare for them to be able to make informed decisions. According to a study conducted by Gust et al., (2005), approximately one-third of the parents do not have access to sufficient information, and the majority of parents do not think the provider of their child’s care is easy to talk to. Many parents desire to have detailed information on side effects as well as benefits associated with vaccines expressed in a factual manner that is not trying to sway them one or another regarding vaccination of the child.

Despite all these vaccines are of great benefit to the children, the best thing that a parent can do is provide their children with access to vaccines. Having good health is vital for the children and it will enable them to live long lives. The main benefits of vaccines include the following:

Immunization can save a child life

Due to the advances in medical science, children could be protected against diseases than before. For some diseases which at a time killed thousands of children, they have been eliminated and others are close to extinction due to having safe and effective vaccines.

Vaccination is safe and effective

Vaccines are provided to the children after long and careful review by scientists, healthcare professionals as well as doctors. The vaccines involve discomfort which might result in pain, redness, or tenderness at the site of the injection which is minimal compared to discomfort, pain, and trauma caused by diseases being prevented by vaccines.

Immunization Protects Others You Care About

Though we have young children that can not be immunized and some have got weak immune systems who end up dying annually in the US, it is good to keep the ones you can safe. For the children that can be immunized, it's good to ensure they are immunized fully. This prevents the spread of diseases to friends and loved ones.

Immunization Can Save Family Time and Money

The children with vaccine-preventable diseases could be denied chances to attend school or other child care facilities. Some of the vaccines preventable diseases could result in prolonged disabilities and could take a financial toll because of the lost time at work, medical bills, or long-term disability care. Getting vaccinated against the disease is a good investment and usually covered by insurance. Vaccines for the children’s programs are funded by the federal government program that provides vaccines at no cost from families with low incomes.

In conclusion, whether to go for a vaccine or not, it’s the decision of the parents. Looking at the benefits brought about with vaccination is advisable for parents to seek their children’s vaccinations since it’s a way of securing the future of the children. Every parent has to be encouraged and taught about the importance of vaccinating the children which will have a positive long-term impact on their well-being.
