Mini-Lesson Plan w/ Exceptional Protagonist / Main Character
For this assignment, you should:
Identify a quality children’s or adolescent book that has an individual with some type of exceptionality as the protagonist / main character
American Library Association (ALA) (Links to an external site.), com (Links to an external site.) and ColoursofUs.com (Links to an external site.) are great places to begin your search)
Create a mini-lesson that you might present to your class that builds on some major concept present in the story.
For example, the protagonist (main character) might be a character with a physical disability, and your lesson might focus on the importance of treating everyone with respect, regardless of their individual challenge. As the teacher, you would likely conduct an interactive read-aloud of the book and then design a student-centered learning activity that helps to reinforce the message of the story. While specific format (for the mini-lesson) is not required, the following components should be included:
Title of lesson
Intended grade level
Purpose of lesson
TEKS
Objectives (2) (refer to Bloom’s Taxonomy for recommended terminology)
Learning activity(s) (Refer to description above). This should include the "I Do," "We Do," and "You Do" components. NOTE: This should NOT involve a worksheet.
