ENG 1 11: Annotated Bibliography Assignment

An Annotated Bibliography is an examination of sources for use in a research project. In preparation for

your final paper , you will write an annotated bibliography , examining three sources (of the five total that

you need for your paper) that you plan to use to develop and support your argument.

Your goal is to evaluate the credibility of each source, to determine how you will use its content, and to

practice citation. The purpose of this assignment is to encourage students to actively research, critically

evaluate, and consider how each source will help them construct their final paper . Please note that

while you have to find FIVE sources overall for your paper, you only need to write about THREE

for this assignment.

Before you begin writing your annotated bibliography, you will need to select a topic. Please read

through and become familiar with the Advocacy Essay assignment sheet and all its requirements .

To summarize, your task for the final paper is to select a moment of your life when you faced adversity

and advocate, in essay form, for something related to the adversity you endured. For example, if you

were bullied (or witnessed bullying) as a child or teenager , you can write your paper advocating for

stricter laws on cyberbullying or tougher punishments for students who bully in school. If you endured a

medical crisis (or witnessed a family member or friend do so), you can advocate for that

illness/condition, explaining the importance of certain treatment options and/or encouraging others to

educate themselves and potentially donate to research causes in support of a cure for this

condition/illness. The point here is for the author (you) to have a stake in this paper , and the sources that

you compile will both educate you on this issue and help you support your overall argument.

Once you have selected a topic, you should begin researching. We will have a library presentation to

assist in this, but consider starting sooner.

You may collect your sources from a variety of places – online, through the library , using online

databases – but among your sources, you MUST include THREE that are found through the library

databases or through the library itself . This means that ANY source you find through a database

search is considered reliable . ANY book that the library has in stock is considered reliable . You

might consider finding all of your sources through the library , simply for the assurance that you are

The other two sources you use for your project can be found through a general internet search,

but the source itself must be reliable. We will learn in class the qualifications that a source must meet

to be considered “reliable”, but consider the definition: the Oxford English dictionary defines “reliable” as

“consistently good in quality or performance; able to be trusted”; this means that you must be able to

trust the author and the content of the source in its ability to convey accurate information. Just as you

wouldn’t want to trust someone that has betrayed you or let you down, you do not want to trust a source

that has nothing at stake if they get things wrong.

For each of the three sources you are annotating for this assignment, write a citation and an

annotation. Annotations MUST include:

A proper citation (MLA format)

2-3 sentences describing the main ideas of the source

1 sentence describing how you found that source

1-2 sentences on why you feel it is a reliable source

1-2 sentences on how you plan to use this source in your paper

This 2016 W ashington Post article covers the costs of childcare throughout the United States,

comparing them to the costs of other essentials, such as rent and college tuition. The source uses a

great deal of figures and numbers that show the discrepancies throughout the country of what parents

are paying in childcare costs. There is also a major discrepancy in the quality of childcare, with some

states, such as Georgia below the average for access to quality care programs. I found this source on

Proquest while searching through the library databases. This source is reliable because it is published in

a major publication, and it is clear that the author did a great deal of research, bringing in data from

multiple states, and citing experts, such as organizations like the National Association for the Education

of Young Children, the National Association for Family Child Care, and a recent report done by a DC

think-tank exploring a “Care Index”, which researched childcare options across the country . I plan to use

this article in proving just how expensive childcare is for parents, and how location often determines both

affordability and quality . There is also an interesting note about how President Richard Nixon vetoed a

bill that would have provided universal childcare in 1971, but he believed the structure of families did not

demand this service. However , in the time since then, American culture has changed, and I agree with
