Research Paper Guidelines

***This final writing assignment is due April 16th, 2021, by 8:30 pm

Following the completion of your research paper outlines (10%), and as you start to define your topic and your major research question, here are some criteria to keep in mind for this assignment:

  • Your essay may be on a contemporary religious movement or one event (a case-study) that embodies the connection between religion and violence. You may want to focus on a particular aspect, e.g., the religious movement’s political views, their approach to scripture, how they justify acts of violence, etc.

  • You may analyze primary sources in your paper; that is, texts written by members from a religious movement or community or passages from religious scriptures that are particularly significant for an understanding of how a religious tradition interprets religious violence. You may decide to focus your paper on secondary literature (articles or books) and address in detail how one particular scholar approaches a certain issue connected to religion and violence. If you choose to focus on the work of one particular scholar in the field of Religious Studies, you will need to then discuss their methodological approach (i.e., Girard on “scape-goating” or Jay’s theory of sacrifice and descent). Remember that you may take one of the authors from the readings in class and examine more closely his/her work and scholarly project (i.e., why they are working on the issue of religion and violence or what are their arguments for explaining the existence of religious violence).

  • You will need to start with a particular question that your research paper will try to answer.

  • A good paper provides good analysis.

  • Your research paper therefore must demonstrate that you are aware of different scholarly and academic approaches to the study of religion if you choose to focus on one example or case-study of religious violence. Please be clear with respect to which aspect of the issue of religion and violence you intend to discuss in your paper; that is, is your approach to a particular case-study historical, sociological, or phenomenological? As well, you may want to test if one scholar’s theory of religious violence applies to the particular case-study you have selected.

  • As well, since your research paper may choose to focus critically on situating the author or movement, you may want to address the social, historical or political contexts (i.e., reactions to secular values, “Westernization”, or the role of religion in the public domain): this will help you present in your paper the particular position(s) adopted by the individual author or group you have selected in a focused manner.

  • Keep in mind that this is a short research paper (8 pp.). You will need to use at least two “scholarly articles” (internet resources or magazine articles do not count). Remember to include references when citing or quoting from your sources. You may use in-text references or footnotes and any format for referencing as long as it is consistent throughout the paper. Also remember to include a bibliography at the end of your paper.

This is my topic :-

Religious Fundamentalism and the Rise of the Christian Right

I HAVE ATTECHED THE DOCUMENT OF THE RESEARCH PAPER ALSO WHICH YOU NEED TO BUILD ON

ON WHICH I HAD THE FEED BACK :-

I'd recommend in terms of objectives that you might want to consider focussing your discussion about the history of fundamentialisms so that you can then spend more time on the last two areas of consideration, concerning development of movements in the "Christian Right".

Research Paper Checklist

Note: Papers must be written using proper formatting and references. You can use any of the commonly prescribed formats; e.g., APA, Chicago or MLA. Since your assignment is a research paper, you must make it very clear what are the sources of your information. Failure to include proper references throughout your paper will lower your grade, especially if your paper departs entirely from any proper method of reference and citation.

Does your paper have a strong thesis statement and a clear introduction? Does your paper have a conclusion?

Have you used your sources effectively throughout your paper? Is it clear to the reader of your paper which sources you are using and how you are developing an argument on the basis of these sources?

Do you include proper citations and references? Are you writing with an awareness of how you are using materials, ideas, and ways of discussing ideas, topics, facts, and arguments, and citing your sources?

Are you presenting ideas, arguments, and analysis in your own words?

Drawing on your sources, have you illustrated your position fairly and accurately? Have you taken into consideration all the positions stated in your sources that are related to your research topic?

Does your paper present a logical argument? Is it persuasive? Have you considered counter-arguments to your position or different interpretation of the issue addressed in your paper?

Is your paper well presented and thoughtfully structured?

Does your essay contain spelling mistakes and typographical errors? Have you checked the grammar and syntax in your writing?

Does your paper avoid narration, summarizing, and paraphrasing?

Overall, does your paper show insight into the topic or offer a new way to consider the topic?

Check to make sure that your method of references and the format of your bibliography are consistent. Have you proof-read and edited your paper before submitting it?
