In truth, big problems are made big by many small problems combining together over time to elicit a large-scale ef fect. The solution, is, therefore, to change many small things, causing ripple ef fects over time and space. For example, believing that one big solution will end the COVID-19 pandemic is faulty; it is only through many small solutions, taken together over time, that true progress is made, and society can become safer for all of us. Some solutions include mandating face masks in public, or social media sites flagging or removing disinformation, or companies guaranteeing paid sick leave, or schools/companies embracing virtual learning or teleworking. Any of these are a step in the right direction, and taken together, they all will lead us through this dif ficult period.

Chances are, you believe that there are some very large-scale issues in your world that you wish you could change. You might feel helpless to make a dif ference or hopeless to try. However, we all have so much within our power to create a better world. W e just need to find those small solutions to big problems and encourage others to adapt them too.

For this essay, you will be looking at a big problem, but focusing on ONE solution . That one solution will become your argument, and you will look in depth at how this one solution will make a difference.

Another example, the topic of depression. There are many causes to depression, and there are many different solutions to making a positive dif ference in people’s lives. Rather than focus on many ef fects of depression or the various treatment options, you would focus on one: reducing social media usage.

Exercising. Getting more sleep. Seeking help from a therapist. Just ONE of these. Research this ONE solution. Write your paper arguing about this one solution. This will give you the space to do solid research and provide detailed and well-organized arguments that are not too broad or lacking in detail.

So how do we get to that one solution? Well, by narrowing and then narrowing more. Yet another example: climate change. T oo big of an issue to do justice in a 4-6 page paper . But what about focusing on reducing plastic? Still too big for a 4-6 page paper . Ok, so what is ONE change we can make to reduce plastic? Using reusable bags in stores. Now we are talking! How many plastic bags would you not bring home from stores in a single trip? Ok, now consider a month? A year? See what kind of a difference you have the power to make just by changing your behavior?

Now imagine what could happen if your paper convinced two people.. and then they convince two people.. and so on. How many plastic bags would be saved? In a month? A year? This is what I mean by small changes leading to big changes. Look for these small changes. Cultivate them. Encourage others. And pretty soon, that small change becomes a major solution.

Solution based papers also give writers the space for detailed examples, for integrating their own experiences, for creating conversations with fewer but more important sources. You should not argue alone. Y ou should utilize at least 5 sources in your paper, aiming to use reputable, detailed sources that you understand and can integrate into your writing.
